depends

who you talk to. I have a tippy without, and accuracy is a big problem, I have bought a Lapco Bigshot (voted by most as the barrel to get) and I still have problems. I am going to get a flatline for mine, as I am getting a Shocker as my primary marker, but I still want to use the tippy as a 'long range' marker' (i.e sniping)

A friend at the site has a Flatline, and - if setup correctly - it does not break paint, and is far more accurate for distances over the usual marker range, ie the ball "floats" for the first 100 yards or so, then starts its drop, unlike a normal marker which starts its drop at the barrel end.

Basically for short range work (i.e Tournys and woodland enclosed rec ball) no

If you are playing mainly open rec ball, then yes, thay can be good fun, and as I have found out, very good at long range.

As I am converting my Tippy into a paint rifle soon, I may have some bits that you can buy cheap, I will see how it goes.

100 yards? I don't think so...

I was the owner of a Tippmann 98 Sniper, and I got rid of it after the first two times I tried it. Sure they shott farther than almost any other marker, but the sccuracy was terrible. The balls would fly left and right never in a "flatline". I know my marker was set up right, because Tippmann put it togather for me. As for chopping or breaking paint, my Flatline barrel did that frequently. Spend the money for an Ultralight and some other upgrades for you Tippmann.

I wish they were. I got an Autococker right after those two times, but that dosen't mean my opinions on lower guns arent still good. In fact, I highly recommend the Tippmann 98 Custom to anyone who is just starting out. They can be great rec-balling markers with a couple of adjustments. Decent performance with great reliability and a simple upkeep makes for a good rec-balling combo. I just don't like the Flatline, as my personal experience with it was terrible. Like I said in my previous post, that's why people should stay away from it.
The reason you hear so many good things about the Flatline is because it's owners etch into thier mind that it's a good barrel. Same with entre setups and markers, too. Awhile ago I was browsing the Tippmann forums and somone with a Tippmann Sniper-like setup said it kills so many Angels in performance; that's what I'm talking about. Higher-end 'guns don't come with the large proce tag for nothing. I know I'm a little off subject, but you get my main idea.
Flatlines may have the same price tag as an Ironman Boomstick, but that dosen't mean it's anywhere as good. In the long run, you'd be better off firing at people from a shorter distance away with a Boomstick than trying to "Snipe" them from very far away. By the time you fire the 'gun fromt hat far away and they can see you, they'd be behind cover before the ball could reach them. Although, the Flatline is ver unpredictable with it's firing patterns; to the right, left, left again, to the right; you can't tell where it's going to hit. usually not where you're aiming though. All of this occurs when holding the 'gun upright too, so don't even mention that.

Sounds more like bad paint. Big problem with a flatline is that they are a complete b*tch to keep clean. I disagree that they shoot all over the place if running right, as I have seen first hand how affective they can be.

I do agree with the rest of your statement, the 98 is an 'entry level' marker, and will never be as good as imps/angels/cockers etc. But then we dont all have a thousand pounds to spend on a setup.

I now hang up my Tippmann Groupie Hat, and head off to get my shocker. :D
