What absolute nonsense. Hill sprints combine with various other tecniques can lead to huge improvements in speed. That is why pro sprinters do them!!!!! I don't want to get into the technical reason exactly why but basically hills help to increase a particular phase of the movement which can be difficult to isolate. These are also widely used by footballer, rugby players to name only a few.

Besides which mass also has a correlation to strength, strength in certain muslces is also proportional to speed, hence why the likes of Linford Christie are very muscular.

I'm 17 so apparently that's 183

I don't want any more muscle!
I work in a farm shop so I really just want to be more toned, I don't need anymore muscle I've already got man-arms from carrying all those 25kg sacks of potatoes  :D

we've bought a cheap rowing machine as well so i could work that in after the run maybe

I hate hill runs but I'll have a go at them

bit different but this forumula is a guidline. I am not going to get myself into trouble by trying to guess your age to work that out for you :)

You really need to design a program by taking your measurments as you are now, comparing to your ideal measurments and then working the plan to get rid of the difference. If you want to lose weight then you really should be doing 3 to 4 sessions of cardio a week of minumum 30 minutes max of 60 minutes. If your weight is fine and you just want to develop some muscle and fitness then your 20 minutes is fine but maybe add a light weight session once a week.[/B]

Rosie, a rowing machine? a treadmill? are you building a gym? :O
I also joined Wolf Mountain- an indoor climbing wall which is pretty cool
apart from the aforementioned man-arms effect :D

If your only 17 your max would be 203 and when you are fairly young it is much easier to get to your max safely. I have done testing to find peoples actual max heart rate have seen people hit over 200 and been fine after. But that sort of very high intensity training should not be under taken on your own if you don't know what you are doing.

You don't have to do hill sprints most people don't like them because they hurt so much for so long. You could start off with just flat sprints. get 2 lines about 20-30m apart preferably on grass encase you slip. Then sprint to the first line and walk back then as soon as you get to the first line again turn and sprint. This will help you get into the feel of having to sprint correctly. Then if you want you can add hills and stuff like that on later.

You implied that there is no performance benefit interms of speed to doing hill sprints, your were wrong simple as!

Also now you have started this, what exactly is a twitch muscle. I assume you are reffering to the general term of fast twitch muscle fibres and in fact not only that but a sub groub within that which act anaerobically. For your information these are exactly the same muscle which are used when doing hill sprints but infact can be used mor when doing hills.

it would be helpful if you read my post before quoting me.

i never said that they didnt do anything for speed a merely said that they are fine for building muscle mass which predominantly there used for!

And any explosive movement will use twitch muscle albeit hills or flats.

but for good fast feedback on improving speed hills would be the last thing i would suggest

How exactly have you worked that out?

Do you think sprinter like to be held back by lots of really heavy muscle or do you think they do what is best for there performance!

This is very simple sprinters do hills, hills make them faster than just doing flats.

The only reason for a novice not to do them is that they will not be used to the pain.
