Once you have an idea of what sort of gun youd like, keep an eye on the classifieds. You can generally get a lot more gun for your money by getting second hand! Try and borrow from friends to play a point with, or at least hold in your hand, before you buy. And how about watching you tube maintenance videos? Different markers need different amounts of maintenance!

Ego's are beautifal to shoot and alot more efficient than their spool brothers, only downside is if you want a new model you have to pay a pretty penny.

Also got to agree with Mclovin, the etha is a nice reliable marker that wont cost you an arm and a leg and if you want to go for the Milsim look you can just get a kit for your attachments :)

My first marker is (I still use it) and ego 9. fairly sure I don't have any upgrades on it and it shoots perfectly, not had a problem with it and have had it about a year and a half. I have played numerous tournaments, walkons and big games with it and have loved it with every shot. hasn't let me down yet.

Overall a really good first marker imo, newer one are probably better, but then again I have only tried and LV1, vanquish and DM14, all of which are lovely, but expensive. Mine does the job I want it to do and does it well. Can't see myself getting rid of it any time soon. hope this helps. :)

BT4's, Deltas, Tippmann 98's, A5's & original X7's are a well out dated design, inefficient, loud, heavy, inaccurate, massive profile, any tourney marker is going to put them to shame.

Form over function with most scenario markers, scenario marker are designed to look cool, like a military weapon, wasting money/weight on fake mags, scopes, stocks, lasers, flashlights etc etc where as a tourney marker is designed purely to sling as much paint in your opposition direction.

First marker, personally i would suggest a poppit marker, less to go wrong whilst your new to it all, keep an eye out for mini's, axe's, eteks, older egos. Try and get a hold of them all before you buy, get yourself down to your local walkon, and have a shoot of some different markers, as some people cant get on with how compact the mini is, or the trigger on this marker etc, some find egos and eteks to loud, still going to be quieter than any of the markers i mentioned at the top of this post.

Hope this helps.
