OK so I went to have a mess with my gear yesterday and realised there was a small hiss from the centre of my fill nipple

air system is a nitro duck 4500psi xstream adjustable
the fill nipple as you look at it has just a hole, unlike my other angel preset that has a bit of metal in the hole. dunno if this makes a difference

wierd cos it wasnt leaking when i last used it, and hadnt noticed until i came to look at my stuff last night :(

what i need to know is
- if i take it off what do i need to do to clean / check it out - is there an oring inside there that might have got shagged or might there just be a bit of dirt or something?
- when i put it back on do i need to loctite it in place? which type? looks like 242 / 243 from the loctitie FAQ thread...

or failing that which type of fill nipple do i need to buy to replace it with?

cheers

im not sure what inside the fill nipple, but it stands to reason it could be dirty.
probably better if someone else answers "nipple maintenence"

However..

Putting it back on.
Locktite 242/243 is the right stuff for the job when putting it back on, its also important to remember to completely drain the bottle before removing, or you could strip the threads (not to mention it will fly off with a couple of thousand PSI behind it.)
When replacing/refitting, resist the temptation to over tighten it as it doesnt do anything extra for the joint.
Failing that, a little PTFE or Teflon sealant tape wrapped around the thread anti clockwise (if you were looking straight towards the threaded end) will do the trick if the locktite leaks.
However, this is frowned upon as it has been known for any "loose tape ends" on the inside of the bottle can theoretically break off and cause you problems by jamming up your reg. However, this is unlikely and avoidable if your carefull with the tape.

bottle is completely empty and i have loctite 242
so presume just unscrew the fill nipple and check for any crap/damage in there, refit with 2 small blobs of loctite on the threads to tool tight?

cheers

yup. pretty much, when unscrewing it though, try and either hold your bottle upright, or with the nipple pointing down as the stuff already used to keep the thread tight flakes off in a powdery form that you dont want to get inside your bottle.
Also, clean the nipple thread, and the bottle thread before putting it back together. make sure you remove all the old sealant.

to cover the thread on my guage, i found 3 drops of locktite was more than enough.
And barely tool tight, you really dont need to screw it on that hard, a good indicator is count how many threads you can see before you take it off, aim for about the same number on reassembling.

they are replaceable usually, I have spares for a PMI bottle, not sure if they will be the same size. Look at it first and see what the condition of it is. If it looks ok, clean out any crap on the oring and fill nipple then put a very small amount of lube oil on the oring, just to slightly dampen it.
That should do the trick. I wouldn't locktight it in either, mine is just screwed in and it won't budge. Remember not to screw it in too far however!!!

right thanks for the advice i know what im doing now i trust :p

gonna just screw it back in to the same point, and loctite 242 which i have is quoted as removable, so a small dab of that shouldnt do any harm i hope.

cheers for the advice
bottle isnt that old so im hoping the oring is just dirty or something and i dont have to go buying bits to fix it :(
