Do away with flags ...

Yeah - flags are what is a part of the "original" format of the game - as the game fields have evolved (from bush to bunker to hyperball to airball) the game format has not evolved with it.

Perhaps it is time for flags to be a thing of the past - and find something new and more exciting. I have to agree though, if we are going to retain flags, then by moving to centre flag it does make the flag worth something....

As to alternative formats - buzzers are a good idea (and would rewards fast speedy teams - stack one tape and just go !!), but the format of points would need some work.

USPL format is another way - but I've heard accounts (none first hand I'll grant you) that it is a very paint hungry format.

What other ideas do people have (seriously) for a change in format that would be:

(a) spectator friendly
(b) easy to explain to a non-paintballer, and
(c) don't need more paint than currently used to play (even less paint usage would be good)

New field layouts

That should be fun.
Played a field once, with a TALL central bunker. I play back, next to the tape, and all my cross lines were blocked (only speculative long balling over it). Only the front guys could see into the other side. Plus, some interesting unexpected developements on the breakout. Like i said, it's fun for sure.:D

The vast majority of players are going to reserve judgement until they've had a chance to play a new format.

The most important thing will be for a new format to be implemented at a Millenium event and then ask what the players thought, such as happened with the way the game rota's were changed.

All sports evolve over time and a little experimentation will not hurt in the long run.

The thing with buzzers is that it makes the teams rely on speed. Some people are fat and they cant realy help that. One of the greatest things about paintball is that it alows all people to play fat skinny old young. Now alot of back players are "fat" what happens when one "fat" back player is left in the game his team gets penalized because he cant run to the buzzer as fast as another skinny front player. Buzzers might work for a ten man game just so many spectators can relize the game has ended, but i dont think a point system based speed of players would work. I think that real time scoring would be great with a nice score board in the middle of the field. All it would take is some specialized arm bands with upc codes when a person is eliminated it adds 5 points to the score when the flag is taken from the pole the team that takes it gets an auto 25pts on the score board. It would realy help the spectator side of the sport

Nothing but good ideas so far.....

But getting an organised/body to take this idea onboard is a problem......good luck to you.

We have just witnessesed the event of X-fire in the UK....a rec-player freindly format/idea...........great to watch to the non-tourney player....makes the bloke in the street think....I'll have a bash at that.

Towards this aim I agree that tourney play should be more accessable to Jo Bloggs on the street.......he's your bread and butter after all to the ppl over here...

To get ppl to take a hard look at fields......talk to the ppl in the know ......the guys that made Mission paintball/X-fire.....after all they just put it on T.V.

Perhaps a little communication between the media and the players.and I don't mean the guys at the top.....with heads where the sun don't shine( no offence intended).....would do us all good.

Paintball is about having fun.......let's not forget this concept.....why did anyone out thre start playing.........lets get it straight.....not for the money..Right??????

But fields to need looking at........making that T-bag /wing nut/witches tit.....can be a drag.......pl know the score there.....

A shortening of fields??....not happy with that idea.....how do the newbies know where to go??

They'll be hit before they know it/scratch one new player.....not good.

The idea is to make our sport more accessable.....great electronics!!......not at a local site.....ain't gonna happen.

Pro level......maybe/at our level........get real!!

center flag

when i first came across this forum i did not realize that it is based in the UK...i play tourney ball in the southeastern area of the US and we have used the center flag for quite a while now and it makes for some exciting plays...try to get one of your fields to experiment with the center flag set up and i guarantee that they will stick with it.
thanks for your time,
