yeah the big downside to bounce vests is they get quite hot, and thats even in cooler weather. If its comfortable enough to wear mine then i do because i don't see why i should be disadvantaged against others who are doing the same. its definitely saved me a few games before. strictly speaking its not allowed but its something thats not enforced anyway. heck i seen a photo of somebody wearing a hoody under their jersey at the first cpps this year!

I wouldn't get a vest, it really doesn't hurt that much, I find pretty much all protective gear too restricting (bar a mask of course), I don't even wear gloves. Personal preference of course, play a couple of games and then decide if you want that extra protection. Getting you own mask is definitely step 1, and absolutely make sure it's thermal. If you've hired from almost any site then you'll have undoubtedly experienced the problem of it fogging up very quickly, with a thermal mask (~£40 new) you won't have that problem.

On the knee pad front consider what it is for:

Just patrolling and knealing. Any knee pad, but make sure it is stable on your knee.
(Eg the top strap should stay in place (possibly safety pin it in place) the lower should be loose for movement)

Crawling needs something better - the minimum crawling knee pad should be an old school military sniper pad sewn in place or Velcro the back of your trousers and the strap

(A large rubber square covered by the appropriate camo. Or can be made with a foam mouse mat sewn on the inside)

Diving around or serious crawling needs the paintball style long elasticated knee pad that you put on your legs under your trousers
Also add elbow pads of the same style.

you dont needs a chest protector. If you were to play tournament paintball then you should consider the investment but you dont need it for woodsball
