EXL for 2005 ??????????

Do you really want to be like the NXL?

Just make a first-class, top-notch Open X-Ball league.

Look how much better venues and events are worldwide compared to two years ago. Everyone is so eager to ride the train on in to TV land, but this is where the real evolution is.

Look at the current state of the NPPL. They've made events that teams do not want to miss. Infamous basically left the NXL so they could play 7-man too. In turn, they have games that fans do not want to miss. They actually have people paying to watch paintball!

How much do people pay to watch NXL games?

The EXL IS "poor business" for promoters, on the face of it.

If they ONLY look at what they can net on entry fees and what their expenditures are, the EXL looks like a bad idea:

EXL field:
8 referees @ € 100 each per day = € 2,400
Added work hours for setup (scoreboard, electricity, etc.) = € 1,100 (to make it even numbers ;))
Prize money = € 10,000
10 entry fees (the maximum number of teams you can run on one field) = € 15,000

Profit: € 1,500

7-man field:
8 referees @ € 100 each per day = € 2,400
Prize money = about € 2,500 (based on a 4 field event)
15 entry fees (the maximum number of teams you can run on one field) = € 12,600

Profit: € 7,700

And this is even when staffing the field with Pro refs.... which promoters sadly seldom do.

Obviously, if the EXL was comprised of - say 20 teams.... the budget would look a bit better, as the entry fees were then doubled.... which makes the profit per field € 3,000.

All that having been said.... we are not talking about a lot of money here, and promoters would be wise to examine all the added benefits they get from X-Ball - which are mostly soft values and possibilities, that has so far not really been utilised, or utilised poorly.

I don't know enough about the expenses of X-ball to say you are right or not. But the PSP runs the division 1,2 and 3 X-ball and they have to make some kind of money. that makes it worth while?
I can see that 7 mann makes more money for a promotor. But if people want to play X-ball it should be room for X-ball tournaments, it does not has to be a closed league.

Well.
You cant realy compare 7-man and X-ball.
7-man will draw the same crowd if the best teams are playing and you have some placer to sit.

Lets say that we get a Div 1 field were all Div 1 games are played.
And something to sit on.
Then people will sitt there and watch.

doesnt psp use shorter halftimes? i think it is something like 16mins but not sure....and couldnt that be applied in here too?

lets say the mill series makes two open xball divisions with 8 teams in both divisions (or more) and uses the 32min game time, that way they would spend less time and could still run the same amount of teams or more and it would guarantee a spectator friendly games when teams like nexus, joy, cyclone, malera etc... are in the same division and not in some closed "super league"!

that would be more expense friendly to the teams and still they would get to play xball.

now i dont know how many teams this would take to make it worthwile to the promoters but its an idea!

agreed.....there are so many ways to increase the teams/per field that we are seeing at the moment, we are getting 30mins between matches at the moment, cos the staging areas are a little to small for 20-40 people from two teams, make the games start exactlt 15mins from the last game end!!, reduce the game time to 16mins (this will reduce paint usage which will help less supported teams enter!) and maximise the light at the events that are staged! so that games can be played later in the day to get maximum use of the field(s) Boogie and Dan dont mind reffing 12hours non stop each day they told me!;) :D

also open the division up and i think you will get enough 'non-NPPL' qualified teams playing it as their major series, at the mo we have RL, Ignition, Ducks, Jags, Sharks, Cyclone, Powertrip, Malera, Hardcore, Camp Tigers, and the few other teams that have played events this season and would wish to play more next year.

if we in Europe just give it up i feel we will be selling our future again! it is by far the only format that spectators want to watch, its is by far the most exciting and exhilarating format to play. and if we set the standard again, like we did once with the Mill series we can attract our own publicity (not necessarily TV) and encourage outside sponsors to get involved

If ye lower the number of players to 4 or 3 and shortens the games we can have a Div 1/2/3 Xball series to.
So there is a way to get in ti X-ball without all the money involved.

Nick, let's not muck around here mate and lift hopes unnecessarily because there will be no EXL next year as things stand.
Promoters won't do it, they have already lost a considerable amount this year running XBall and they will not be prepared to do it again unless somebody (Richmond), an outside sponsor or the NXL is willing to pay for the whole thing.
And I am not talking about a series here mate, I am talking about just a one-off tourney.
As for what you imply about Euro etams not making the NPPL, I am sure you are right but it won't be the EXL they will be refocussing toward, it will have to be the 7-man.
But there are things moving in the background where perhaps the future isn't as gloomy as it seems.
There may well be no EXL but XBall isn't the only game in town and nor is 7 man, we'll all have to wait and see how it all pans out.
And Nick don't worry mate, you'll get your pre-emptive fone call from your discrete little source letting you know what's going on :)
