well was visibly clean, but I stripped the protective stuff off the back and that appears to have been the cause of the problem!

Guess it had some liquid under the rubber(?) coating

make sure you seal the back again m8 i use car 2 pack clear lacquer and apply a few coats or cellulose lacquer should be ok too
