I don't buy "hype", the testing done by Tom Kaye was pretty thorough, and realeased long before all this bore size business was even an issue for most players. I agree that it's definitely better to have a bore too big than too small though. Too small a bore and it drastically decreases your efficiency because more force must be applied to the ball to make it shoot, and your chance of chops is much higher because of the higher amount of friction, and higher force of the bolt needed to propel the ball. In an ideal situation, you'd be better of with a perfect bore match than one that's too big, that's all I'm saying.

Now that I think about it, you're right. It makes perfect sense. The only reason why these players are using large bore size is because even in the highest quality paint, when you are dealing in hundredths of an inch, there will be balls that are inconsistant in size. If you match your paint perfectly to one ball you are running the risk of one of those inconsistant ones to break in the barrel down the line. To keep this from happening they use a gigantic bore size for their barrel. Keeping this in mind, even if you do match paint, it may be wise to match it, and then use one bore size higher than whatever it matches best to. That way it's kind of a trade off between the large bore size and the perfect match.
