OK, Steph, just for you
First--YOU decide what the billboard is going to be about and then use whatever help you get in filling out. If you just take in loads of scrambled ideas it leads to muddied thinking and muddied results. So, number one, is it a billboard advert for a specific site or for paintball in general as a promotion?
What info must be communicated? List everything it's supposed to say then wittle that down to the absolute minimum.
Next, consider the location. Do you know where it will be? Is it a drive by or will folks have an opportunity to look it for more than a second or two?
Generally, simpler and bolder are better for billboards. Color is good but not so that it requires the eye to separate out alot of different shapes very quickly--particularly if billboard is on a roadside.
And, here's an idea for either kind of billboard. Close-up pic of group of players, men and women, boys and girls, with Airball props perhaps behind them and trees and bright blue sky (you do occasionally have a bright blue sky, don't you?
) surrounding. You don't need markers, paintballs, or explanations. All you're looking to do is equate the word "paintball" with outdoor, fun, social activity. Simple.
Hope that helps a bit.
PS--in case you were wondering, yes, I do actually know what I'm talking about. While I don't do billboards typically I am a professional artist, illustrator and designer (and all-around bon vivant.
