And they all would be able to go and compete at the world cup? And only point of the playoffs in London would be to sort out the badass of EXL?

Juho/Takeover, Finland
Juho,

Right: the top two teams from each division will participate in playoffs at Campaign. Those teams will also be the ones who have earned the right to represent Millennium X Ball at the X Ball world championship at the World Cup. There they will compete against the top four teams of the NXL.

And yes, the playoffs at Campaign will determine the ranking.

If tiebreaker 2 and 3 are the same for both teams..... tiebreaker 4 quite obviously will be as well !

You need something different for tiebreaker 4

Also - kindly make the points scored in each match public !

Thanks

Nick
Hey Nick,

True, I'm a little overworked but I'm having a lot of fun.

As we discussed, if tiebreaker 1 can't work then we use 2. And, as of the current standings, 2 eliminates France and leaves Denmark and Finland tied at 8 positive points each. Tiebreaker 3 gives 24 points to Finland and 22 to Denmark. Tiebreaker 4 puts Denmark ahead with 14 points given up versus 16 by Finland.

So the point differentials or points scored or points given up at Joy could make all the difference.

I hope I haven't missed something here. This is not my strong area.

You can find the current standings at the Millennium website under the X Ball link:

http://www.millennium-series.com/X-ball/X-ballStandings.htm

For the sake of comparison you can look at the statistical breakdown of the NXL at their website:

Just had another look at the scores, and we DO have a potential problem for Joy.

If Russia beat us 8 to 6 and beat Finland 6 to 4:

In that case, France, Finland and us all have 4 points and a score of 28-22 !

All 3 teams will be equal on all tiebreakers (us beating France, France beating Finland and Finland beating us in the head to head games).

It COULD happen, so we DO need a different 4th tiebreaker !!!

Tiebreaker games won't work, as you will then have to suddenly schedule 3 new X-ball games at Joy, because it is a 3-way tie !

Nick
You bring up some interesting points, Nick, but there is one thing you seem to be missing: at each tie-breaker a possible elimination may take place.

In the above scenario tie-breaker 2 would eliminate France and leave Finland and Denmark tied, and these two teams would also be tied in tie-breakers 3 and 4. But France doesn't suddenly come back into the picture. They will have already been eliminated from consideration.

Then there is tie-breaker 5: least number of penalties.

And there is tie-breaker 6: a single play-off game at Campaign Cup between Denmark and Finland that decides 2nd place in Division B.

But, the mathematical probabilites of what you describe must be pretty low. Think positively! Get a lot of points.

Whatever the case, I'll consult with Mike Ratko, the NXL commissioner, to get expert advice on this.

How about this....

Ok Steve, what happens if:

1. Team Denmark gets abducted by the Swedish Bikini Team.
2. The mini communication chips implanted in Team Russia's brains stop working just before their match with Denmark.
3. Raehl comes on here and says something that actually applies to the Millennium series.
4. Team Finland only has three players because the rest are looking for the toilets, which are conveniently located 4 kilometers from the event site, and they have to forfeit.
5. Windler "borrows" the last two boxes of Team Sweden's paint halfway through the second half of their match, and Team Sweden can't finish the game.

What then, Steve???? WHAT THEN?????????

1--I volunteer immediately for resident alien status to Denmark and offer my services to Team Denmark.
2--that intense anti-magnetic pulse that was sourced just outside the RL staging area had nothing to do with the fact an unnamed but reputed to be well known American team captain was walking by at or about the same time. Despite an avalanche of protest no charges will be filed.
3--only if the alternate universe theory has any merit.
4--match won't be held in Toulouse so should be ok.
5--that's Dr. Evil to you, buster.

In the event all things occur as postulated Steve will make the final decision, after close consultation with Bill Cookston, in accordance to the rules, either written or unwritten.

I think I'm pretty safe here. I've already had more than my fair share of Murphy's Law here: I have to deal with you as captain of one of the teams.:D

No - France is NOT eliminated by tiebreaker 2, as the points spread is EXACTLY the same for all three countries in the scenario I describe.
Nick
Nick, my over-worried friend, I thought we understood each other in Flen. Tie-breaker #2 eliminates France most certainly because Denmark and Finland each have 8 positive points and France has -8. It is theoretically possible for Denmark and Finland both to somehow end up also with -8 points.

And...I don't see any problem with penalties and the fact that Denmark judged in the same division once. I very carefully monitored the judging and you were not biased, or were you? Sure, some teams were a little better at reffing than others but I think it was all good. I personally think penalties are a good criteria because I want to promote fair play and safety.

It is VERY unlikely that a three-way tie could come up. So I think the worst-case scenario would be a play-off for 2nd place between 2 teams in Division B.

Then the next question is important: Is Team Denmark prepared to represent Millennium X Ball in Orlando? If not then that privilege/responsibility would go to the next team down.

Job working with X-Ball

Would you possibly be interested in a job working with X Ball?
Steve,

Just as soon as the MIT Tech publishes my articles on quantum theory and advanced algorithms. Otherwise I'd have no credibility behind my answers to Nick's questions. :D
