Regarding a chat room,
on 1 hand I think a chat room would be good and might help to reduce the amount of chit chat on the forums, also possibly usefull for those questions you need a quick answer to. It'd also be cool to hold discussions about a given subject on there. On the other though the site does have pm's that you can chat to each other on!

Paul, PM's are good when you have to talk about something particular and the other person isnt on-line, but iv tryied to chat with someone over PMs and it is chaos, it is too slow and you fill your space in there up really quick
i suppose the messanger is a good way, but i always get mixed up with the people on my messanger, they dont use the same names as on te forum
dunno if anyone has said this before but...
an option to click on private messaging in the forum jump scroll bar would be nice
