Well, i've just bought myself a Honda CR-V.
It's not new but it's very clean and tidy. I spent many months deliberating what to buy and went from one extreme to another, I considered hot hatchbacks, estates cars, 2 cars, converted day vans (didn't want to look like a pikey though) and eventually decided on the CR-V as it was the only thing which ticked nearly all the boxes.
big enough for 5 people
boot big enough for a weekend of luggage
not too sore on fuel
ability to fit in with other hobbies ie paintball, mountain biking and quadcopter flying
intelligent 4wd is a nice addition, i'll never need full low range boxes or anything like it. Have been driving cars for 18 years and never once been stuck anywhere in any weather.
Same as this one, plans are to add a couple of roof rails, boot liner, couple of skid plates and maybe side step rail things. Will possibly change the headlights to something LED and things like the number plate lights, interior cabin lights will also get swapped out.
This is the new family car so will get a few outings next year across the water all being well.
