I live 5 minutes from Crystal Palace and let me tell you this; besides the caravan park and the horrific Queen's Hotel (now called the Quality Hotel lol!) there's piss all around there in terms of hotels. Nearest places to stay are in Croydon, which is only worth doing if you've got your own transport. Central London hotels are also a Loooooooooonng way away. The NEC had it's major drawbacks but it was much better equipped in terms of hotels near by.
Most people as suggested will probably camp it, but you can train it in (but it will depend on engineering works). The nearest train station is Crystal Palace, and its a 5 minute walk to the venue from there.
If you book into a Hotel you will probably need an adult anyway to secure the room against damages with a credit or debit card.
