I use a 1000d and really happy with it. If i could change anything would be the chance to shot movies but with a good lens you cant beat the 1000d. This has being replaced by the 1100d now which you can shot video

I've looked seriously at bridge type cameras, and don't see the point TBH. If you want interchangeable lenses and SLR type functionality, then buy an SLR - the lens choice and so on will be wider and cheaper, and the quality will be better. If you want something that will go into a paocket, look at a high quality compact.
Personally, I use a 400D, which you can get for about £250 secondhand. the kit zoom is pretty good (30-80ish I think) and I added a 75-210, plus a few filters and a a decent bag (actually, two bags, one that just holds the camera and a lens, plus a full kit bag).

If you do decide to go down the DSLR route, secondhand is definitely a good option. I picked up a secondhand Canon 40D for similar money to a new 1000D (as it was then), but got the benefits of having a higher-spec all-metal body, which feels mega-sturdy. Only thing I'd swap it for would be a 7D, but that's a little out of my price range!

I used this site and got great service: http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/

Haha, I like your style. However it's just not got the portability aspect. My main reason for not getting a DSLR is because of their bulkiness. I could shove a 4/3rd camera in my backpack and even have room for padding the lens but a DSLR body as well as a lens is pushing it... But not only that, I can buy a pancake lens and the 4/3rd cameras can pretty much be pocketable which is appealing cos I would struggle to force myself to take the DSLR out unless I was actually going out purposefully to take photographs.

bags come in different sizes...
Very true! But I don't want to buy a new bag to go biking with just for a camera. The one I have is the perfect size.. It hugs the back and doesn't have too much excess space for stuff to move around in and disrupt by balance but it fits everything I need into it, including a small camera.
