ok when i hurt my knee the best thing i found was walking lots/then moveing up to cross country running but somewhere soft so low impact

general circet training was good as well but again low impact on your knees so outside is good ohh and of course swiming

I don't think you guys seem to quite understand cookies problem. As if he strengthens the whole of the quad muscle group the problem could become worse, he must try to isolate as much as possible the particular muscle that is damage. And so he is best of doing what I said in my original post
