Begging vs Grovelling
I'm in the same boat, I'm just teaching myself how to dive after years of sliding in on my knees. I've gotten to the point where I can slide in shooting fairly accurately, which is an advantage of controlled knee slides.
Now the all-out superman where your stomach hits the ground right after the elbows doesn't allow any shooting for a few minutes. Don't know if this is a good answer but here's what I'm trying; get up more speed than usual and then, instead of diving off the side of a pool, fall forward and shove off with your feet (like kids who run and dive onto those water slipway plastic sheets in the back yard). Elbow padded elbows hit first with marker held up (to keep it working even though it's a tiny target), then gut.
I reserve diving for more dangerous forward moves, and usually hit the ground earlier than usual to get below incoming fire. Then I crawl (one hand on ground, both knees going) to protection before trying to get my shooting back in the game.
It's true; you can knock over a bunker with a knee slide (I have) and not break yourself into pieces, but don't do it with a superman or you're looking at fouled muzzles, snapped hopper necks or worse. And don't try superman's on hard-packed earth ... you'll bounce.
Lots of better answers than mine; good luck.
