One thing many people forget to do is keep their legs low. They have a tendancy to stick them up in the air when they dive, and it can take a lot of practice for some people to overcome this problem. I know it I had that problem at Toulouse last year :(

Diving as opposed to sliding minimises the players profile when moving into a bunker. It is especially used off the break when your front guys are taking the 50's. Also when sweetspotting, you usually shoot between head and waist hight, so sliding would mean you effectively go in under the line of paint. Every little edge helps.

Also there is the added Hootchies factor as well :D

supermaning minimises the profile whilst sliding the trick to get low just before you slide and pushyou legs hard to propell you foward. dont be afraid of sliding on you're stomach if you put you're hands on the grounds to lessen the impact you will only slow yourself down

Begging vs Grovelling

I'm in the same boat, I'm just teaching myself how to dive after years of sliding in on my knees. I've gotten to the point where I can slide in shooting fairly accurately, which is an advantage of controlled knee slides.

Now the all-out superman where your stomach hits the ground right after the elbows doesn't allow any shooting for a few minutes. Don't know if this is a good answer but here's what I'm trying; get up more speed than usual and then, instead of diving off the side of a pool, fall forward and shove off with your feet (like kids who run and dive onto those water slipway plastic sheets in the back yard). Elbow padded elbows hit first with marker held up (to keep it working even though it's a tiny target), then gut.

I reserve diving for more dangerous forward moves, and usually hit the ground earlier than usual to get below incoming fire. Then I crawl (one hand on ground, both knees going) to protection before trying to get my shooting back in the game.

It's true; you can knock over a bunker with a knee slide (I have) and not break yourself into pieces, but don't do it with a superman or you're looking at fouled muzzles, snapped hopper necks or worse. And don't try superman's on hard-packed earth ... you'll bounce.

Lots of better answers than mine; good luck.
