Ok as a general rule, whatever barrel you buy at least 6-8 inches of it needs to be unported. The first 6-8 inches is where the paintball reaches terminal velocity. Add another 2-4 inches or so to give a little stability and there you go. Anything over 12 inches will only give you less gas efficiecy as you need more energy to propel the ball out of the end of the barrel at the correct velocity.

Since the paintball does not exactly match the bore of the barrel, a a longer length will not improve accuracy. All it will do is impart friction on the ball, slowing it down.

A longer barrel is usefull for pushing aside bunkers or foliage but thats it.

Also the more porting along the barrel the less noisy it will be but will be less gas efficient.

Barrel Length ??

Like everyone has been sayin' - choose a barrel to suit your position !!

A bunker monkey up front will need no more than a good 12" barrel. But a Mid or Corner Back will always choose 14 / 16" for a flatter trajectory - for sweet spotting off the break.

If you can only afford one barrel - get a decent big bore like the Dye Xcel (0.69) of 12" - this will let you shoot all variations of paint. But if you can afford it get a good 2-piece system like a Smart Parts Freak - this will allow you to change length but best of all fit the bore size to the paint you are using - believe me this makes more difference than length any day - especially to accuracy.

Range is'nt as much of an issue these days with such small fields - accuracy should be your main worry - putting the ball where you want it is key !!!

Good hunting

Having said that, what are the alternatives to a Freak set. How much does the competition cost, and how does everyone rate it? (not that I can buy any yet..but in a couple of months...:) )

Only other barrel I could think you try is the J&J two piece - although you can interchange the fronts to give different lengths of 12", 14" and 16" - but this keeps the same back section with the same bore size - for around £60 plus extra for new fronts - but by the time you have done with that you may as well have bought a Freeak set up - there really is no better system at the moment.

I have been told that the pipe is a better system and im sure others would back me up on that. But pesonally i would just stick with a bommie because all this ball to bore size is crap apparantly. Or so ive been told by someone in a real good team so take it out on him..........im scared:(

Until they invent a perfect 0.68 ball that will never vary in size due to the humidity and temperature I reakon ball to bore size is very important.

Try it yourself - take you standard barrel and 3 or 4 different batches of paint - now push a ball in the end of your barrel and blow it out !!!

If you go red in the face and the ball ain't moved - your barrel is too tight and you will get a hell of alot more bursts.

If the ball drops straight through then the barrel is too big a bore - which is ok but the gas is not being used as efficiently.

I understood it should blow through with a slight bit of pressure to be spot on and give best results.

But what do I know - I've only been playing since 1986 !!

Dont Try This At Home!

Yeah i once blew a ball aout through the barrel and the good news is it was perfect ball to bore match. The bad news is the pricy new carpet had a huge green splat on it and me and my mate had to clear it up in about 5 mins before my parents got home. Thank good for vanish carpet stain remover.
I think ill stay with the boomie.
