effective length around 8-10" - as mentioned the majority of the force from the air is used by this point. the porting starts at this lentgh to smooth the exit from the barrel - spiral porting supposedly induces a little spin on the ball - similar to rifling - but i doubt it really works.
after this the longer barrels need a higher pressure (slightly..) to provide the extra force to overcome the extra friction the ball gains on travelling down the longer barrel - thus a lot of long barrels are usually well coated with teflon/ceramic/high polish, etc - to counter the friciton.
as for a barrel kit - i have just invested in a freak kit with AA front. some of the other guys have these and rave about them - so i'll join the bandwagon.
