Hi all,

I've been very into airsoft, hitting all the milsim weekenders and racking up quite the collection etc for the last 10 years or so, but feel like a change...

Used to work for a few years marshalling on a paintball site, have messed around with a few guns and want to start coming down to my local regularly, with the possibility in the future of getting into a team.

So, I had a question or two if the pro's wouldnt mind answering,

Why are barrels fluted? is this to reduce expansion of gas and therefore exit velocity?
How much difference to accuracy does long/short barrels make? In airsoft its none whatsoever.
Lastly, more of a generic noob question, in comparison to stuff in its price range, are Ego11s (used) seen as reliable / good guns? I'm not hugely into teching so would prefer lower maintenance.

Thanks, and dont mind a bit of airsoft related abuse, would expect it!

Welcome airsoftie ;)

Don't panic, a lot of us have crossed over to the dark side from time to time but there's nothing quite like people being splatted with a paintball to get rid of that "you never hit me" lark.

See answers to your questions above :)

Some words of advice in general. Stock up on 9v batteries, buy bulk duracells from ebay. Most gun problems can be traced to a duff battery.

Spend your money on a decent mask.

learn how to quickly strip and clean your marker, if it's an ego you're talking about a 3 minute job to clean it!

always buy good paint. don't buy a good gun and put sh!t paint through it or you will not have a good day at the office. I always find out the top brand then buy one down eg gold silver and bronze, buy the silver. If money's tight buy the bronze but don't go lower.

Thanks for the advice Dusty, reassuring to know that the gun I'm thinking about can be cleaned quickly!

In the mask department, had an I3 but lost it, have an old proto now but definitely in need of a change...

Do people mostly run GoPros on the head, or are Contours popular? If contour would you be using a waterproof case?

Thanks!

I think go pro is hard to beat personally, head or barrel mount will be fine. Most barrel mounts tend to spend a lot of time looking at the ground though and yes, a case is a must!

there's also the R7 paintball specific camera.

Okay, stick with the GoPro I think.

Any advice re barrel porting / length?

Hi,a 14 -15 inch barrel is all you need,a paintball reaches its maximum velocity in the first 8 inches .An Ego 11 is a fine marker-I have one and comes with a good barrel as standard. The porting reduces the noise profile. As above, get a good mask, quality paint and enjoy.

Metalfof is correct here just stick with this

the ego11 is a very reliable marker and we still service and have plenty of parts for them

I my self and a lot of people at planet eclipse play airsoft, Most of are not really into big scenario games of paintball so we play airsoft instead for the CQB and Urban

the GoPro's are not really paintball friendly as mentioned the R7 Camera mounts to your Paintball gun without getting in the way you can also get Airsoft Picatinny rails which I also use

I have a load of airsoft and paintball videos that I made with this camera if you want to see what the quality is like ;)

The only difference between a 14 and 16 inch barrel is.... You are 2 inches closer to the target.

I used to shoot everything from an 8" boomstick through a 16", all the same basic trajectory. It was easier to get into tight places with a smaller barrel, and easier to push aside bunkers to get a shot while hiding behind the bunker more using a longer barrel. Porting won't matter at all, it removes the tiny bit of turbulent air at the back of a ball to help stabilize it...like an incredibly tiny amount.
The ego's are great, JT, Virtue, DYE, Empire, all make good masks, don't use old lenses they can crack if they're old. Do not want that to happen to you, real quick way to ruin a day :)

Looks like good quality out of that camera. I'm more of a head mounted user, as I find gun cam is mostly floor... although in paintball/speedball that may change.

So the consensus is that barrel length doesnt affect anything? You mentioned trajectory, is a longer barrel a flatter trajectory? Dont see how that would be true if both barrels had equal muzzel velocity

Re porting, dont care much for sound profile, especially if im on a paintball field, not in camo, playing speedball!
