Guess it's no secret...I heard it from a member of Aftershock who was at our field this weekend. Sounds like there were some agreements that if one team did it, others would follow and Miami started the ball rolling.

Take this as you will--I'm no 'insider', but I trust someone who plays for the team knows what's happening.

It was posted on another site that the NXL is lifting the exclusive clause for it's teams as long as they player under a different name then their NXL name. Supposedly this was discussed on e-money's radio show. Either way Denver is going to be sweet to see these teams go at it once again. It's a bummer for Infamous if the clause is lifted after their franchise was sold, but they still get to play a lot of events.

There will be a Shock team going in which will be made up of players who play on the NXL team but this isn't really the issue as this has been on the cards for quite some time, what is important here is the reaction of the NXL.
All the NXL can do now is open up and allow players to play where they like otherwise they (NXL) are in real trouble.
The NXL have no choice at this point as the other option of putting down an outright mutiny would be disastrous!!!!

The problem from then on is this; the players who want to play on other circuits (who will probably be now green lighted) will have to fund this on their own in some cases.
The NXL franchise owners and sponsors are already racked out when it comes to throwing money into these teams.
Close is the time when some people may be looking critically at whether this investment is going to pay dividends.
Something substantial has got to happen with regard giving the investors confidence in the success of the product.
I hear a statement regarding this may be made in a few weeks....we shall see.
What we have here is a three pronged problem :-
The potential success of the NXL is wholly dependant upon Dick Clark, now even if he has the same resolve to put the NXL on TV (and I am told he has) then it remains to be seen whether his timescale of events is going to be consistent with the NXL survival possibilities.
After all, while Dick Clark sits there scratching his nuts, the sponsors and backers of these NXL teams are spewing money from their pockets like there's no tomorrow.

The second problem is one of personalities, there's a saying that 'politics makes strange bedfellows' and the lure of money can do the same.
The promise of large profits can allow a situation where people who would not normally work together, work as partners.
Petty and perhaps profound differences are temporarily put aside for the purpose of profit.
This is all well and good as long as the path ahead is assured and not too extended...I believe that situation can now begin to cause real problems as recent events have suggested.

The third and final problem is one of player base, if you ain't got teams and players, and I am talking about top teams and players, then you ain't got nothing, it remains to be seen how much more the NXL will hemorrhage players and teams before the holy grail of paid wages is bestowed upon its members.

The XBall format is undoubtedly the future for our sport, I just think the PSP may not have been the best vehicle to promote it.

As of yet, no vote has been taken but with changes requiring a two thirds majority and with nine members elegible to vote, it stacks out like this :-
Billy and Adam have two votes, one owning the Philly franchise and the other now owning the Miami one, Jerry Braun holds the NY Extreme franchise and with Jerry's partner, Paul Statler also owning one, this would seem to indicate the motion wouldn't be carried.
This puts the cat amongst the pigeons as the Assassins can't possibly uphold their resolve to play the NPPL without having to play some NXL players (his roster ain't big enough) unless he just puts in a bunch of nobodies so as not to compromise his NXL status.
If Shock are going to play in the NPPL, they will have the same choice, run with Xball players and face the NXL consequences or find players to play for the team who do not play in the NXL.
The gauntlet, at present, has been thrown down by default by some in the NXL, it remains to be seen how the other members react to this.

That would be cool to see 4 divisions of Xball.
Looks like it isn't going to be Philly or Denver. The website now has it being about 70 miles outside of Pittsburgh on the polo grounds of a resort. More info on PBNation here.

One of the Assassins biggest backers is NPS (Gino). Considering the position NPS took with Miami - allowing them to leave NXL to compete in NPPL, DI Xball and possibly Millenium events - it seems likely that they'd take a similar position with Oakland.

As for Shock... if the August Chicago Open ("not PSP. Not NPPL. A completely different Chicago Open") is an indication of how Rennick feels about the NPPL/PSP conflict, why shouldn't he drop NXL and play where the money is - NPPL and DI Xball.

Do Bob and Rennick need the NXL as much as the NXL needs Bob and Rennick?

Shamu, the situation is significantly different in that Gino did not own Miami, Richmond did.
If he allowed the Oakland's NXL roster of players to play in the NPPL and there was no subsequent change in the NXL ruling of not being able to play outside of the NXL, then this breach would mean those players would not be allowed back to play in the NXL.
With Oakland being his sole representative in the NXL, I wonder if he would allow a situation to develop where he would potentially lose his highly talented roster just so's they could play in the NPPL.
He's certainly got the balls to do it and nobody could stop him if he so wished but it's a debatable strategy considering the NXL isn't dead yet.
After all, Dick Clark could still pull it out his ass and then everything would be ok in the world of the NXL.

It seems like all the hand wringing about player eligibility is short sighted.

Each of these players gets a 1 year suspension if they go play in the S7, right? So what. If TV starts showing NXL games once a month starting this month, those suspensions will be up early mid-season next year. Those players could still be in it next year. By the time anyone but us is watching, they'll be back. I am not sure how much pressure there is for an instant hit, but if we are relying on the public embracing paintball in less than one season, we are screwed anyhow.

Also, is it the case that a NXL player who leaves starts his suspension immediately, serves it even while he is playing in the S7, and may rejoin a year after he left, regardless of how he spent that year? If so, it wouldn't deter me. If only I had such choices to make. It seems like a clear example of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Why would the leaders of the paintball industry be so foolish? I guess I have the benefit of hindsight. The exclusivity thing has always seemed like a way to strike at a business competitor (poorly) disquised as another way to regard the athletes like real professionals.

Professional pawns, maybe.

I don't think the Gardners will buy any more franchises. They only need 2.
Rumor is that the DCP deal has been formatted to follow just 2 teams as they train, prepare and play the NXL. These 2 teams are to be the 2 teams owned by Smart Parts...
Good luck to the rest of those guys in the NXL!!
