Not wanting to appear aggressive, but have you tried Mole Grips?

Skeet it's too deep in the body of the reg to reach, and has minimal flat to grip anyway. Being brass it's bound to chew up and then oil beef hooked. Hopefully the box spanner will work. Standard sockets are too shallow to clear piston shaft which sticks out the middle.

9/16" reg nut

Alternative to the box spanner... grind the bevelled edge off the front of a standard 9/16" socket so that it sits totally flat. Stick it in the reg with an extension bar and it should work just fine.
