Well, since you only ask why...
The smaller the number of letters you can do a search for, the more often that combination of letters will be present on the forum, potentially giving the midgets doing the searching a very large headache.
Serioulsy, let's for argument's sake say you could do a search for just one letter. Any idea how many results would turn up if you did a search for "e"?
