Yes, but technocology cuts both ways. In the 40's it took the finest minds in the world and several (well actually lots) of billions to build the first atomic weapon.
Today we live in a world of nuclear proliferation, state sponsored terrorism and the required know how to build theses weapon is in the public domain (even if the uranium is not). Even if there is only 1 chance in 10,000 that terrorist groups (with shall we say an ultra conservative warped intepretation of the Qu'ran), might want to detonate a WMD aren't these measures worth the trade off? We're not talking about 50 people in the London Tube bombings, but 10's possibly 100's of thousands.
It's a much higher stake game now, so the controls may need to be more punitive (although I take the point that local councils should not have access to the tools they currently do).
To be honest, if the options are:
Rendition, water boarding and a cattle prod to the testes to some warped scum
or
Death, leukemia and 4 lamb chops cook themselves on the way home from the butchers;
I'll take the former.
I agree with you completely on this point and of course, this subject is always going to divide people. I can fully understand why it makes people somewhat uncomfortable (bit of British understatement, the yanks I work with hate it!
). My standpoint however, is that I believe it is necessary to collect this information and the possibility of it being used by agencies other than those involved in security, however annoying and violative, is the lesser of two evils.

at the end of the day how many terrorist attaks have we had, and if you really look at it how many major targets are easily accesible, it might sound stupid but terrorist attack always seem to come around at the time when the support for an illegal war is dwindling or we need a reason to illegaly annex a country to exploit its oils.... coincidence i think not
And what war was the US fighting in 2001 when Usama and some of his cronies smashed 2 planes into the World Trade Centre or even the 1993 WTC bombing? were really that bothered about the future continuation of US oils supplies, the cheaper option would have been to nuke everything South East of Turkey. This pushes oil to the $150 a barrel mark making oil shale extraction and refining cost effective, of which the US has access to plenty.
