Without taking my pc apart, is there anyway to find out what motherboard i've got - i need a new/better graphic card and want to make sure it will fit etc...

Not with a HP, it will come back as "generic motherboard" most likely.

pause the info screen in "post"

not done this for a while, as the comp is powering up the board info is usually shown in the "power on self test" screen. Pressing the pause button used to stop the "post" and you could read the info on screen.

was just about to suggest this if not the motherboard fully then at least the chipset being used which is probably the most important to you.
