Personally i wouldn't bother with Quad core processors if you are purely gaming. Games do not utilise them.

If you are video editing etc, then yes, maybe
Ummm why's that exactly?, my machine is a gaming machine, I went from a dual core to a quad core and noticed a hell of a lot of difference, the new games like left for dead do utilise multi core cpu's, and i'm sure newer games to come will do :)

@ Stokecity_m, I just went on overclockers for you and put a basket together from items they have in stock.

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-252-IN

Asus P6T Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Unfortunately the MSI board I would reccomend isn't in stock, and having nothing but bad experiences with gigabyte this is the best thing I think.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-320-AS

EVGA GeForce 9800 GT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (512-P3-N971-TR) Evga have a trade up program and a 10 year warrenty.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-082-EA

Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant Power Supply
To power it all, a quality PSU is a must. (can be switched for another brand, but these seem pretty rock solid).
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-008-CS

Crucial 3GB DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz (3x1GB) Triple Channel Kit (CT3KIT12864BA1339)
3GB tripple channel ram to make the most of your I7's abilities. If your sticking with 32 bit then no point getting more, and no point getting faster as you wont be overclocking.

All in all that comes to.

Maybe higher than your willing to spend? Maybe not. But it will last you a good while, with upgradability with RAM if you go to 64 bit windows, an evga trade up program if you want a better gfx card in the future and rock solid PSU and motherboard to support it all.

If you want something cheaper, give me a better budget cost and I can tailor something down.

You really like to take thing personally don't you Bon, everything i have said here, has been constructive where you have not helped in the slightest, only flamed. Im trying to help this guy out, this website is very usefull, have you actually read it? Whats this link got to do with this website, nothing? You really are not contributing.

Finally do not call me an idiot, i take offence to that, i have not in any way offended you ! I dont care if your a mod or anything, there is no right to treat forum members like this !
He is not a moderator, he is simply an angry geek setting the IT world right, one issue at a time! Legend says he is Bill Gates's half brother's step sisters son's dog walker. :D

Anyhoo,
Stoke, can you spare £400 for your new bits? Like a lot of the others I recommend Overclockers and also say go for a dual core/quad core Intel chip.

Ummm,at least on my Mac,programs run on a max of two cores at once (for now). However, that being said, with a quad core,if your running apps that rinse out two cores, you got another two to take care of the OS.

Plus the fact, considering the speed that software developers (particularly game developers) learn to utilise newer hardware,it wont be long before you'll need a quad/octo core to run stuff.

Theres a little wisdom in upgrading over spec as this will give your shiny new gubbins a bit more longevity, dont want to be upgrading again in a year !

Cheers bon - i don't suppose you could do the same with about £200?
i may also be buying a brand new computer, and then upgrading this for my son to use (but i don't like him enough to spend more than £200 as hes only 8)

All he's bothered about is playing dawn of war 2 at full spec.

Can you post the specs of your current PC?

Go to start > run > type "dxdiag" and press OK. The specs will be listed there, and you can save that as a file form an option at the bottom.

If your looking at a simple upgrade for this PC, some new ram and a better graphics card is what youll probably be after. I was under the impression you were running a complete banger of a PC :p
