Newbie wanting equipment advice

Morning all! Been to a few walk on's and to a tournament in Uttoxeter a year or so back (just to spectate), bought an ION, evo 2 hopper and pure energy 1.5L tank with the intention of starting and low and behold...i got a new job which ment i had to work weekends

Anyhow here i am a year later and i want to start properly (As now i have a new job, releasing my weekends). I have been reading bits and bobs from around the internet and i have decided to buy all new equipment, using my ion as a spare as a guy from my work could be joining me and using my old equipment.

So, ive gone and bought myself a dye rotor hopper, an invision I4 mask, and a load of dye playing gear (jersey, pants, gloves etc) and all i need now is a marker and a decent tank to complement it.

I havent really set myself a budget, i dont mind forking out a wad if it will give me a fighting chance of becoming a decent player!

So far i have been looking at the DM9, EGO 09, and im struggling to see which would most benefit me, or if there is something better on the market to give me that extra bit of head start?

In terms of air i was looking at the crossfire or the dye throttle? dont think im getting the whole high pressure low pressure thing though, or what is best for what gun

my advice would be to get down to a walkon, and try these markers out. im sure most people will let you have a rip on their guns, especially if you offer to use your own paint. you cant go wrong with an ego or dm really, i have a dm7 and i love it.

in basic terms, egos are slightly louder than dms, and require little maintence, what there is, is so easy a 10 year old can do it. planet have AMAZING customer service which is a big plus. dms are slightly quieter than egos, require a bit more maintainence, also have really good customer service.

in terms of air, before you buy work out what position you play the most. fronts ussualy favour small light air systems like the throttle 0.8, wereas if you are at the back you would want something bigger such as a 1.1, and weight doesnt matter quite so much.

whatever you decide on, definitly get a fibre wrap with at least a year or so test on it, i have a thing about buying new for air systems, but you can get them cheap on here. also invest in a bottle cover.

Even a gun in the £250-350 price bracket would be ideal for walk-ons. I ran a well used (£220) o5 Ego for 18 months, and it was an amazing gun for the money. Simple and cheap to maintain, and never missed a beat or chopped paint. Sold it on for close to the same value last year.

Why blow £800 on a new gun that'll loose half it's value in a couple of seasons, when you could use the cash for actually playing a few games?

Im not expecing a gun to make me a good player, but surely a decent gun to start off with will help provide a steadier learning curve than using a gun thats pap?

£400 worth of playing ball will make you a much better player than an £800 marker will.

Whats wrong with £400 worth of playing with a £800 marker? I have a bit of extra money for a good marker, so i dont mind going that bit further - provided its easy to use, fires straight and will last me a good few years before i want to move on!

Another question that may seem a bit dumb, but what is the norm is safety equipment? Obviously a mask is absolute, but elbow and knee / neck pads...do everyone use them?

I consider knee/shin & elbow/forearm pads standard kit. One of our guys smashed his knee badly on a flint in the woods, and it took a long time to heal. I also wear a neck protector and gloves.

spend what you want mate, but nearly any of the top end markers (dms, pms, egos, angels etc) will shoot straight, be easy to use and will definitly last you a good few years.

to be honest, the shooting differences of a sl8er and a ego 06 or 7 are negligible, its the nut behind the bolt that really counts

play some walkons, maybe even go to a training clinic and pick up some tips, watch clips of the pros playing etc

If you have that sort of money, my advise is dont waste it. Try before you buy! All the new 09 guns will shoot the same speed, and do pretty much the same thing, its just which gun feels best in your hands.

Don't know which shops are near Grimsby? (someone know?) you could probably try some at a local shop or as said, at a walkon if you ask nicely enough

Do not buy anything else. You have a marker, air, hopper and mask. That's all you need. The one thing you can't buy (even if you are a Sheik) is talent. I've seen so many people get the 'bug', go out and spend a small countries budget on new shiny stuff - only to be taken out of nearly every game they play by somebody with kit less advanced than yours!

If you have got some spare cash - invest in some 'you' time and get out there and practice, practice and practice some more. There are even a few 'clinics' being run this year - try and get to at least one of them (I think Nicky T may well be doing one soon).

You could even invest in Nicky's DVD (and maybe the Dynasty one as well) as these will give you some good pointers and things to try.
