what type of compressor should you buy?

me and some mates want to get our air bottles filled but we cant find anywhere local that fills them.

if i wanted to buy a compressor would i have to spend hundreds of pounds or could i get one for just over £100??

also im not bothered about how long it takes to fill a tank.

erm try thousands not hundreds.
Bog standard compressors, like you get from diy shops, only provide around 200psi which I think is about 8 bar.
To get 3000psi (232 bar) or 4500 psi (300bar) which your Paintball bottles are, you will need a diving compressor, which tend to be very expensive, usually well over £1000 for a brand new one.
Better of getting a 12 or 15 litre, 300 bar, dive cylinder and fill rig.

You could get a stirrup pump, i believe they can get up to some fairly high pressures, as you have some time spare.

Search Yellow Pages for your nearest dive shops and ask them if they have any 2nd owner 12l dive tanks. Make sure they tell you how to look after it,
Also you will need to talk to your local Paintball shop about getting an adapter to allow you to connect your bottle to the dive tank. These are specialist adapters not sold in dive shops.

Next get advice on how to fill safely - your life depends on it

I'v got one of those stirup pumps back home... I can tell you that you need alot of endurance to get from 0-3000psi, took me about an hour and a half because it was so exhausting .

If you can find a air-rifle shot they'll sell you one for £120 tops!
Easilly spend another £20ish for a dry pack to stop moisture from going into the bottle. When i bled the stirrup pump i was using there was heeps of water that came out, so its put me off slightly.

Dive tank is a much better option, buying the tank is cheaper then a compressor and filling its reasonably cheap, then again if you can't find anywhere to fill it your buggered again!

Around the cheapest dive compressor you will find is a little Hamworthy at anything from £700 - £1500 a Bauer Capitan will rush you back about £1700 or you can get a Dunlop from £500 but they are not really a good buy.

Any of the portable dive compressors will fill a 12l dive cylinder between 3000psi and 4500psi in between 15 and 30 minutes but can only run for about 3/4 hour at a time. If you get a good one and treat it with respect, it will be ok, but take it from someone with experience; you will never see your money back.
Get an currently tested dive cylinder and have your local dive shop fill it for around £2 a fill.

We bought a Bauer JNR which came in at a fraction under £3k at the start of last year.

Superb little compressor, very portable, fills a 232 bar tank in abut 20 minutes from dry, but how often is a tank really that empty?

Normally a 10 minute top up, and Mr Tom Allen made me an adaptor which means I can fill bottles directly from the compressor.
