I have sat and viewed this thread and i can't understand what the problem is. From what i see is that the PA is no longer so a Midlands based tournament/league has gone. Rich is simply trying to fill that gap. Stop bitching and moaning and give the guy a shot at it. What i think would be a great idea would be to get all the interested team managers together and hold a meeting like the good old days of the PA and find out what the customer wants from a tournament. When the PA introduced this it was very refreshing an organiser who want to know what you want. Personally i would like to see a similar structure to the PA in the early days. Super quick turnarounds, a nice pitch to play on, a professional feel to the tournament, a locked tournament, a locked roster, the morning and afternoon sessions were great, and most importantly good unbaised refs. Training refs and introducing a pay scale for them was a good idea too, giving them something to work up too.
my 2 pence
I think possibly what some people are questioning is, is it a gap that needs to be filled?
Plainy the PA didn't have enough cash behind it to continue functioning. Seeing as teams are the primary source of cash for any organiser it seems bullish to expect Rich's series to be a new messiah in paintball when the two longstanding series in the country are currently doing so well (i assume this to be the case having looked at how many teams both of them seem to be bringing in.)
The problem the PA had was that it was idealistic by its very nature. They claimed to be the messiah of paintball and would bring it to the forefront of mainstream sports. Hell they even had an international sponsor and a TV slot. But in reality where did that bring us? Answer? No where. Were no bigger as a sport than before, people still think of paintballers as weekend warriors.
Rich has decided to go with xball full on (if i read correct) and i love this format. I mean the best year of my life was spent playing it. However current industry voices are pointing towards a reconciliation between the two major world series and of a format similar to that of the MS. So in what way does this make sense to all those people who want to play like the americans?
To address those who say we're lagging behind the states in terms of our playing style and this could go some way to redressing that i say - bull****. A box of paint costs $25. $25. Thats f*cking nuts. They can play way more than us. They do play way more than us. Kids play during weeknights, all weekend. Christ even the adults do that. Does europe? Hell no, weekends are it.
But why do we need to emulate the americans? How many of us are actually going to play in the American leagues? Or play Americans? in general? and just because we've played a small tournament series? Why is everyone so obsessed with doing what the americans are doing? It plainly doesn't work in Europe. It's been tried before by a tournament series who take in a large amount of cash and even then it just didn't fly. People should stop concentrating on what the Americans are doing and start concentrating on one series (whichever it may be), and training properly the rest of the time. Players want the glory and so go and play all and sundry but dont want to put in the effort to get the real glory. An upside of this is that aligning yourself to one series helps keep that series floating.
However some of the blame should also fall to the organisers. They have talked and talked and talked about joining up and becoming one series. If they actually did it, (in this country at least) they could easily rival the MS in terms of teams. They could really put on a spectacle. However, everyone wants their piece of the pie and rightly so, but if they could just see past their own wallets for a while they could create something so much better than what they currently have. I am however living in a dream world. It'll never happen.
The PA was great, i truly believed in its ideas. I wanted to believe in the hype but deep down i couldn't. Every tourney that it did, it didn't live up to what it promised. Simple as that. I just hope Rich doesn't fall into the same trap.
