Ah the good old days! When a major tournament just wasn't good enough unless there'd been at least one off-field incident, usually between top Pro players.

I'm exaggerating of course, but there certainly used to be a fair bit more violence than you see today. I knew of tournaments where the draw was changed just so certain teams wouldn't meet before the knock out stage, in the hope that they would never meet as a fight would be inevitable. I've been there when the police have been called out, though can't remember any ambulances for fights.

When we first started up the old school Kellys were our mentors.

Tony, Shane, Greg...etc, we've seen a few things and heard some great stories.

Abuse is part of the game, all that adrenalin pumpin, you need to scream at someone.

Its the law.

It might be more that sanctions for violent behaviour are such that people stop themselves before taking it too far and negating their ability to compete in the tournament/series. As you professionalise the sanctions are more black and white rather than in development. Also, with sponsorship, the organisers cannot tolerate bad press and therefore it would be expected that they clamp down on it to save their necks/budgets.

It's rather refreshing that the paintball community does not get all angsty. The amount of shaking of hands and banter that crosses the sport, despite having spent the past few minutes trying to eliminate them as mortal enemies, is something to be appreciated. The ability to apologise, as people did to me at team captain for one of their players' conduct on occassion, meant a lot and instantly got rid of bad feeling that can be a future foot hold of violent behaviour. Too much voilence out and about on a weekend night, don't need it on a Sunday as well.
