Very Important Tip

Russ - a good point well made!

When reffing in the USA, always take your own teabags - PG tips costs a fortune in all the stores over there, and the Liptons tea which is usually served when you eat out is pretty dire.

Oh yes, and take some scones as well, then you can have a cream tea.

Or a cream pie if you like.

(I'm not obsessed with eating, I just like to know where my next meal is coming from - a full ref is a happy ref)

:)

Hang on

If a players asks you to check someone - you should do it immediately ?

Discuss
hmm... i think this is a more 'have them checked'

'checking them immediately' could result the asking player in intentionally loosing a shot. most ref teams know what zones they are covering, and pair up with their 'opposite', to watch either side of the player. Granted, it IS hard to see all angles, but a ref team that works together properly, shouldn't have to listen to 'check him out ref' from anyone apart from other ref's.

What to do when a player asks for a paintcheck

Is it:-

1. Check your diary to see whether you have any prior engagements.

2. Pretend not to hear him.

3. Feign injury and fall over.

4. Ask "do you know who I am?"

5. Just do it.

any ref doing it for the money is kidding themselves, by the time you account in fuel drinks and food etc it normally costs me to ref, maybe not all if you have a full car but normally its just me.

i do it beause i enjoy it sometimes and get gratifacation out of it knowing i have done a good job and people are pissed off at me. I normally find you cant keep everyone happy what ever the call is lol :D If everyone likes you your being too soft tbh as the person you have just caught cheating aint gonna like you, or the person you have just 1-4-1'd for playing on isnt going to like you. So if everyone does like you then your not doing your job.

Im sure the majority of refs would agree with this as well.

DON'T watch the game, watch the players. Watching to know when a mugger is coming is different to watching the action and not the players.

Pair up with your opposite, make eye contact occasionally and use hand signals if you see someone hit, think a player needs checking, or you believe the ref could move to cover the area better.

If a player changes sides of a barricade, you must be able to see them, so move if you have to.

If the game is being 'slow', I occasionally check a certain item on a player like all of the goggles/hoppers/packs.

As players move or get taken out, move off the tape onto the field if you aren't already there, be dynamic and always think about the best way to watch the players you need to watch (what angle? standing up or lying/kneeling?)

run-throughs or 1-on-1's, if you don't work in a team it's hard to know who shot who first, work together and if you didn't see what happened, don't make it up! Ask what your opposite saw or the next person up from you saw.

Don't automatically believe players who tell you it's bunker rub- look at the shape and whether it has shell in it (and whether the bunker has any paint of that colour on it!)
However if the person's been lying/kneeling on the ground don't be too harsh, might just be broken paint make an informed decision.

If you KNOW, really know you've seen a hit but it's been wiped or slid off by the time you get there, have faith in yourself and pull them. The hit doesn't have to still be there for them to be pulled, if you saw it, it goes.
The ultimate will always support you, unless you're well out of order.

Watch for flinches, or suspicious movements (rubbing oneself sexually on a barricade isn't generally normal, but I have seen it ), swapping of hands for no reason, dropping to one knee might be because they have been shot on the knee.

Wear protection! :) You have to get in there, and to be a good ref and to protect yourself you have to be able to take hits (and you will). Hat, neck protectors, chest protector and slide shorts are awesome.

Be willing to watch and learn, I've learned so much off a few certain people (thanks).
