that's still expensive service that he'll be paying for mateYou have got to remember, that £400 will be for the service they provide and the part will be brand new
My dad once stuck two ford mondeo lenses down his trousers from the scrap to save money if he wanted to buy them new it required two whole new light unitsthat's still expensive service that he'll be paying for mate
garages tend to charge a hell of a lot for sometimes simple things, for example I drive a 53 plate vectra, and i was going to book it in for a full service at my local vaux dealer (oil, filters, plugs the usual) "£200 please sir", I walked 5 meters to the parts department, bought all the stuff i needed for £47 and did it myself £150 for the 'service' is a wee bit expensive
try local scrap yards or ebay for the gear box, 400 excess . . . . . You can get a full engine for 200! Buy a haynes amd a set of tools

And are you sure it's your box thats gone, not your clutch or release bearings etc?!?
QFT, have you ever tried taking the engine out of a car and splitting the gearbox off it with a Haynes manual and the tools you found down the shed206's take a lot of man hours to fix, especially a gearbox job as the guy will have to remove half the engine bay to get it out.
Thats where your moneys really going mate
