Also remember you can barter a better deal with any company. If they refuse, refuse to buy :)

For example, my friend got a £1000 currys PC for £600, he just kept going back and forth to PC world and Currys until one of them said they wouldnt go any lower.

You have got to remember, that £400 will be for the service they provide and the part will be brand new
that's still expensive service that he'll be paying for mate

garages tend to charge a hell of a lot for sometimes simple things, for example I drive a 53 plate vectra, and i was going to book it in for a full service at my local vaux dealer (oil, filters, plugs the usual) "£200 please sir", I walked 5 meters to the parts department, bought all the stuff i needed for £47 and did it myself ;) £150 for the 'service' is a wee bit expensive

My dad once stuck two ford mondeo lenses down his trousers from the scrap to save money;) if he wanted to buy them new it required two whole new light units:eek:

Probably not your model but as an idea;
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-206-1-6-8-V-GEARBOX_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ320177794944

And are you sure it's your box thats gone, not your clutch or release bearings etc?!?
206's take a lot of man hours to fix, especially a gearbox job as the guy will have to remove half the engine bay to get it out.

Thats where your moneys really going mate
QFT, have you ever tried taking the engine out of a car and splitting the gearbox off it with a Haynes manual and the tools you found down the shed

For a new/re-con'd box and the labour I think the 400 sounds like a bargain, good luck with the quest for work, have you considered an evening job? Bar work. kitchen portering, shelf stacking etc. for a few weeks while you raise the money??

Did a fiesta gearbox a while ago.
Tools to get the old one out:
Hydrolic jack
Mechanical jack
Axle stands
Socket set with wobble bar and extension (10mm 13mm 15mm)
Adjustable spanner for the speedo cable
Torx set (40 and 50)
Wrecking bar
Thin spanner (usually used on angle grinders to tighten the disk on)

If your mate happens to be a bit special and by an escort gearbox instead of a fiesta gearbox, you will need the following tools to take apart the gearbox, to make a hybrid fiesta/escort gearbox.

Socket set
Circlip pliers
Torx bits
4 flat head screwdrivers (large)
2 flat head screwdrivers (small)
Gear puller
Many rags for the leftover oil that finds its way out when u start undoing stuff.
1 oven
Lump hammer
Rubber mallet

Replacing a gearbox could be done from tools from your shed, but if you mess up, it may take a few specialist bits that you dont have.

The gearbox we got, cost £100 from a scrap yard. A new box would have been around £250.
