We had an RE lesson in school today, and we ended up discussing religion. Now I'm fine with religion, believe whatever you fancy, if that's your thing and you get something out of it then that's great. But I find the whole affair a bit absurd.
We are also doing a topic on Greek myths and legends. Now many years ago, the greeks believed in Zeus, sitting up on Mount Olympus, throwing lightning and having sex dressed as a swan (or something). These ideas are discounted today. But why are they less valid than Christianity, or Islam, Judaism, etc...? Is it because of the timeframe? I understand the details may be sketchier, what with these accounts coming from so long ago, but if the same length of time passes as has passed between us and the ancient greeks (i.e. several thousand years) will people be studying Christian Myths and Legends for langauge lessons? Is the only difference between Zeus and God that we have stopped believing in Zeus? Are they one and the same thing, just a collection of stories?
Basically, what I am asking is do you believe in God, and what are your reasons.
Keep it sensible guys, don't disparage anybody's beliefs.

live and let live, but god if you thought morals and religion went together, you'd better read this

http://duggmirror.com/comedy/100_Greatest_Quotes_from_fundamentalist_christian_chat_rooms/

(oh by the way, they usually DO, but morals aren't exclusive to religious people)
Not at all, who many people have died due to religion? But fair play, there are some right spastards on that website.... :)

I think this is my favourite....

Some Christian said:
[Everyone knows scientists insist on using complex terminology to make it harder for True Christians to refute their claims.

Deoxyribonucleic Acid, for example... sounds impressive, right? But have you ever seen what happens if you put something in acid? It dissolves! If we had all this acid in our cells, we'd all dissolve! So much for the Theory of Evolution, Check MATE!

Athiests as a Majority

This is what it would be like, if the majority of people were athiests.
ATHIEST KID: Mom, I'm going to go **** a hooker.
ATHIEST MOM: Okay, son.
ATHIEST KID: Afterwards, I'm going to go smoke pot with my friends, since it's "not addictive."
ATHIEST MOM: Okay, come home soon!

The athiest kid leaves the room. The father comes home from work several minutes later.

ATHIEST DAD: Hey!
ATHIEST MOM: Hi, honey! I'm pregnant again. I guess I'll just get another abortion, since "fetuses don't count as human life."
ATHIEST DAD: Okay, get as many abortions as you want!
ATHIEST MOM: Oh, and don't go in the bedroom.
ATHIEST DAD: Why not?
ATHIEST MOM: There are two gay men ****ing eachother in there.
ATHIEST DAD: Why are they here?
ATHIEST MOM: I wanted to watch them do it for awhile. They just aren't finished yet.
ATHIEST DAD: Okay, that's fine with me!

Suddenly, their neighbor runs into the house.

ATHIEST NEIGHBOR: Come quick, there's a Christian outside!
ATHIEST MOM: We'll be right there!

The athiest couple quickly put on a pair of black robes and hoods. They then exit the house, and run into the street, where a Christian is nailed to a large, wooden X. He is being burned alive. A crowd of athiests stand around him, all wearing black robes and hoods.

RANDOM ATHIEST: Damn you, Christian! We hate you! We claim to be tolerant of all religions. But we really hate your's! That's because we athiests are hypocritical like that! Die, Christian!

THE END

Scary, isn't it?

wha!??!

yeah course people take it to extremes, my general opinion is religion gives people something to believe in, and thus they gain strength from their beliefs

well i have said that i am open to the idea, however i base my decisions based on empirical fact.

any who i just love this one

One theory is that the pre-Flood Earth had a canopy of ice above it that squeezed the atmosphere down to, say, 15 miles [...] If you squeezed the air down to 15 miles - instead of 100 - it would be more clear because there would be less distortion - atmospheric twinkle it's called. And probably this canopy of ice would act as a photo-amplifier where you would actually see things much more clearly. That's one theory that [in] the pre-Flood world you don't need a telescope - you could see incredibly well

Reilgion is fine, but what difference is there between them? If there are so many different versions, and people believe that other people's religions are "made up", doesn't that go to say every religion is just made up?
