The reason that fuel prices go up is because crude oil levels are going down.
The more we use the rarer it is so the higher it is in price.
I hate to be the pain in the arse here since I hate petrol prices as much as the next person but it is our fault it's going up, we use too much oil and we're pretty much draining whatever resources we have left. We've used so far about 56% of the worlds crude oil to date.
I'm worried, and Im not even an environmentalist! So switch your lights off people!!

All the oil company's are doing is scare mongering. There are many oil reserves that haven't reached there peak's yet.
In years to come, things like Hydrogen fuel celled cars with be the norm, and they want to make there money while they can. Re-new able energy is the future, the first company to coin a suitable and viable source of it will be the richest company the world will ever see.

Price in the US crept to over $3 a gallon (1 US gallon = 3.8 litres) while we were out at cup in October. So they're paying about 40p/l

How can that possibly be true when we have yet to know where all the oil fields are? New ones get discovered quite frequently. Besides, the last study I read reckons the whole thing about Crude is wrong! That it doesn't actually come from rotting dinosaurs but is actually formed through some complex procedure involving the huge pressures you can get deep in the Earths crust. They cited a well that had previously been run dry, several years later it was found to be containing several million barrels worth of crude. Now if that turns out to be true then its a virtually limitless supply.
Besides, if it gets that bad we can always drill in the arctic. Damn the polar bears, I want to drive to work in comfort!
Don't believe a word of it. Crude oil is basically caused by the weight of water on dead fish and plants. And it doesn't matter how much we havn't found, we have used a serious amount of what we have, and we are using it faster than we find it.
