I own a quad so.. here goes:

I got a Linhai 260cc (made in china ftw) and it is a BEAST. It will take a trailer and carry a ton of stuff easily but keep in mind that you'll need street tyres, dirt ones are way too slippery for the road, especially if you want to carry stuff. They don't go fast (at least the ones made for off-road) but they're strong and need very little ammounts of gas.

Over here you need a full car license and must be 18, don't know about the UK. The best make is probably Polaris but they are soooo expensive, get a chinese one. DONT go for 50cc, they just wont work.

You dont save a lot when you buy second hand.. but that really depends on your budget!
How much is the Polaris? as my budget is quite high...

I ride quadbikes, brothers all race. (ace sport) i would suggest a Bombardier Outlander 800, or a grizzly it will pull anything. and last for ever.

ANY quad related question visit www.quadheaven.com

Please do not buy a Chinese import, 250cc thing on the road, all other quadbikers will laugh at you, sort of like a paintballer in camo's wielding a tippman custom. The imports rust and start to degrade after a month or 2.

When you get your quadbike OTR the MOT place have to restricted your quadbike to 12HP, this can be easily combated by taking off the throttle cover (on handlebars) and taking out the nut or screw they have put in there, cops haven't been trained to check this sort of stuff on quadbikes so won't know the wiser.

Driving ages are all here: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022547

If you're looking for a work horse you would probably be best to go for one of the agricultural type as they are designed to take loads of abuse with easy/minimal servicing i.e. farmer proof, rather than the more flash racy type, plus they come equipped with the racks, towbar etc.

As far as brands are concerned, everybody will have an opinion, just like paintball guns.
