Mine was the same the first time I took it apart.
I held it upside down in a vice(with soft jaws) with the added protection of a rag and used the swivel to grip it with my hand,it will suddenly crack and then sorted.
Make sure you tighten the vice as not to allow it to spin that's where you get the marks and scratches.
