ok figures used by Sporting Goods Manufacturers Asscociation (USA) Paintball has 15 Million Regular Paintball Players.

If I recall the figures correctly that places it 3rd Extreme Sport and for 5 consecutive years. Bowling has something like 45Million and Baseball has surprisingly only 13.5 million.

I believe these figures are us only as footy / soccer was not mentioned. This doesn't take into account rental customers either.

I'd heard from a very valid source in the UK there are around about 3000 players deemed worthy of being called tournament players (i.e. own equipment and play regularly). This number will probably be rising. I wouldnt have a clue about woodland players (i.e. same as above, own their own equipment and play regularly enough) and then you're entering a whole new ballpark if you include recurring recballers and walk-on players (make between 2-12 recurring visits to local fields etc).

just add up how many teams there are in all the Uk leagues, and say average number of players is 6 for each team (accounting for some overlap between tourneys) at a fudge i'd say there's about 3 leagues each with 60 teams with 6 players each, if this sounds roughly accurate then you'd have 3*60*6 = 1080..

anyone who wants to chip in to this ballpark, please do as im just thinking out loud from figures that sound vaguely right ;)
