Ions=waste of time and money!
Seriously, for a good first marker get something half decent 2nd hand off of these forums. something like a Ego 05 or PM/DM, you are looking at £300 max for these markers.
Ions are pigs to maintain and the build quality is low. At least if you get, say, an Ego 05 you know that it will be really good quality because it was one of the best when it was released, With the Ion you get something new with poor stats and quality.

***let the flaming commence***
What do you exactly mean by "build quality"? Are you saying it'll suddenly blow up in your hand?

The main reason Ion's are so cheap is because of the Economies of scale. That's what SP were banking on.

By poor quality I mean soft metal used mostly for vital things like screw heads!!!!!

Yeh and maintenance compared to a DM5 when you just remove backcap slide out bolt, check and relube bolt and orings then silde in and screw backcap back up!
sorry but removing the frame banjos is a hazard in its self because they can easily snap if you dont take reall care. I have owned an Ion, before you ask so I know how to look after them! From personally experience they are a waste of time and money!

But here an excellent 1st marker because they don't set you back hundreds of pounds.

An ion with:

Contract killer grips (red(grey)
Smart parts on/off(black)
Custom reg cover (red)
C clamp locking feedneck(red)
Delrin trigger
Qev
Custom drilled grip frame (comes with spare board with custom leds)(needs resoldering but comes with full working standard board anyway)
Dye boomstick included.
Silver bodykit(standard)

Just sold on the sales forum for £65.

Dont agree at all. To maintain you :

Take hopper , barrel and air off.

unscrew the 6 screws and take off the eye wire.

slide the body frame off.

uncrew the top bit and take the bolt out. clean the bolt and eyes and then put back together. It doesn't take forever and when you get to know what your doing it takes about 5 minutes.

Have you ever actually owned an Ion??
You seem to have forgotten that you have to remove the board's banjos to get the frame off of the body! this is a dodgey process and even then it helps if you remove the battery and reg banjo so you can get above the board and remove the eye wires and the two other banjos.
Takes about 5 mins like you said but you can easily damage the most important bits of your marker in those 5 mins!

Yes I own an ion as a spair gun. I have had it for about 11 months. I said you take out 6 screws ( I counted the banjo's as screws ).

I know what your saying... and your right. They are by far not the best gun, but as a newbie gun and for the money they are very good.

Yes, they are both great. For £250 your looking at the 05 models but very good ones such as (this is already sold but just so you can see what you could get for £250) :
