"What is Best"

"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women. "

Anything from about 25kg to 40 odds (depending) on the leg stuff. mostly the former :D..

Weights, about 8kg doing the skull crushers to 20 kg for presses and 10 kg for dumbells ,its all dependant on the excersise ,skull crushers are rock so i use a light weight for that ,heavier for curls and stuff ,ive only just got into this (weight training) so Im following good advice and taking it slow and not hurting myself..Ive found muscles i didnt know existed..

I'm going to the gym more (okay, at all ...) over summer and have found out how terribly poor my (not so) jedi skills are.

And the transition to free weights is a soding nightmare. Those weight machine lie through the nose at you, try and free lift the same weight and its just asking for trouble. Bloody things.

John, I have had no formal education in biochemistry (like yourself) but I do have a working knowledge, I still have a problem however in you advocating protein intake prior to training and here's why :-

Firstly, I do realize I may be old school bodybuilding but I do keep up to date with contemporary thinking and I have to say, a lot of the bodybuilding gurus do advocate protein intake right after a work out.
Now, a lot of these gurus aren't just roid-heads, they are academics, well versed in biochemistry as applied to athletes and especially bodybuilders.
These guys are in fact real academics who have found their way into bodybuilding and so's their agendas tend to be more scientific than indulging themselves as bodybuilders.
I am not saying this gives them an automatic right to be correct in what they say but it does lend some weight mate.

One of the reasons there is an advocacy of post training protein intake is because as you know, it takes considerable energy to digest protein, (moreso than carbs or fats I believe) and this is why after you have a big meal, you feel fatigued because a lot of your energy resources are used for digestion of that protein, or anything else you may have eaten.

This would then suggest that this energy (used for digestion) would be better used for the training regime thus optimizing the session.

And as far as I know, the fact there is protein (there generally is anyway) in your system (your advocacy of eating protein prior to training) does not effect the degree of protein synthesis when compared to ingesting protein post training.

I have seen, and trust me John, I have looked extensively for, no evidence whatsoever to suggest that there is a greater uptake of protein by the body with pre training ingestion as against post, obviously, if the same amount is ingested.
All that is different is, the digestion curve is shifted in time and not the amount synthesized.

PS I know this doesn't apply to John, but please, please, no Google pseudo-intellectuals need respond to this post, we have a few on this site where they become instant experts in any given subject area with the help of Google at their fingertips, I can smell them a mile off and if anybody tries it, I will expose them in a heartbeat :)

PPS You listening Mikey ?????

it consists of

8-10 mins rowing machine as a warm up

3 sets of 15 reps on legs

IE, 3 sets leg presses .3 sets Extensions ,yadda yadda (on the machines)

Then arms and chest ,some machine work with the same number of reps but mostly weights now ,bench presses ,Curls, Skullcrushers (ooyah) ,Squats

20 mins on the treadmill at 10-12 kph and 5 mins cool down.

Swim 20 lenths in the pool (25m pool I think)

Sauna ,Jacuzzi then 15 pints of lager ;)

Im still trying to work out whats right if you'll pardon the pun..
Why the rowing machine to warm up?
Have you been shown how to row properly?

Check out the following: http://www.concept2.co.uk/training/technique.php#tog1 so i don't lie awake at night worrying that you're rowing like a gym bunny.

Cheers,

Stan

Not necessarily sensitivity speaking mate. :)

It might be the time of day, or just the fact its monday morning but i missed the joke. So i can see how my post would seem a bit sensitive.

Although, was it a joke in general or just a joke aimed at me? As there is some truth hidden in that joke :)
