My view on them is that they are for the most part a waste of time.

They taste disgusting while also being incredibly filling.

In general there is very little need to use any form of protein bar/shake/supplement, it is all a marketing strategy.

You do need protein to help your muscles grow but you would be better off with something like 1 or 2 fresh chicken breasts maybe with whatever your favourite type of sauce might be, i like them with a pasta style and maybe some pasta or rice with it. This will also be good for carbs to help keep your energy high.

This meal will give you enough protein, is cheaper and tastes VASTLY nicer.

Also remember that the key thing to remember when eating protein to help with workouts is your must eat it 60-30 mins BEFORE the workout.

You probably see lots of people at the gym taking protein shakes etc after workouts they are NOOBS. They do not understand that you must leave your body time to digest and move the proteins into the blood so when you muscles need it i.e. after workout it is there waiting to be used. Rather than having to wait for the food to digest before they will be able to use it.

Feel free to ask me if you have any further questions.
John, sorry mate, but I gotta take issue with you here and here's why.
By your definition I'm a noob because I always take protein AFTER I have trained and never before.
Now I know you are studying (or have studied ) this area comprehensively and so i cannot for the life of me fathom why you would state the following :-

They do not understand that you must leave your body time to digest and move the proteins into the blood so when you muscles need it i.e. after workout it is there waiting to be used. Rather than having to wait for the food to digest before they will be able to use it.

Protein synthesis in terms of muscle building is done AFTER training.

You suggest protein should be taken before, which in itself is OK but is not a requirement for the reason you state, muscles do not require protein to function, they need oxygen and glycogen as far as I know.
The protein is a building block of muscle and not its fuel and therefore what you say is just plain wrong mate.

Sorry that was not my meaning.

During the workout your muscles are effectively being broken down, so that they can grow back stronger.

I was not trying to suggest that protein was required for the workout, what I meant was that for the protein to be at your muscles at the optimum time, i.e. just after you have finished you workout, you should give your body time to digust the protein and start to flow around your body, depending on your body this can take about 60-90 minutes ROUGHLY. So say you workout for an hour then you could eat 30 mins before your workout, then once you have finished the workout the protein is already flowing around your body ready to help your muscles recover.

Sorry if there was any confusion I fully except that protein is in no way involved with the "fueling" process of how your muscles work.

With respect to how you train, when you started perhaps the information at the time was much more limited and it has become habit. And the old principle applies well "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" so there was no reason for you to want to look into different ways of taking protein. Perhaps I should have worded it "only noobs and veterans do this" :)

Dskize, as for your nob shrinking all im saying is red and blue's ;)

John, I posted up the ATP creating serum, as its done me well in the past and still does. One of the easiest to get started on as there is no loading required. I know a few people who use it some being clean and others with veins the size of the channel tunnel, both have positives about the product.

Im not disagreeing with you that 99% of it will be marketing but there are some out there that do work.

My knowledge on the subject is limited as ive only looked into the type of stuff needed for the workouts i do but i have a few friends who do exactly what Robbo has said above, with the whole matter of eating after.

Dskize, just out of interest what is the workout your doing at the moment?

Trust me it is all hype!!! Pure creatine will be just as good if not better, especially when used correctly.

Usually leave a couple of days in between but I might go and have a run on the treadmill if the mood takes me in between..it's a good excuse to do the Sauna/jacuzzi bit..
