Sorry this isn't exactly paintball related, but it got me thinking a little. Especially about how it pisses us off when an o-ring gets nicked and we get a leak.

I was reading up on The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster and came across this pic detailing part of what went wrong:

challenger shuttle o ring.gif

That is one mofo of an o-ring. That little ******* leaked due to losing its resilience at low temperature among many other factors contributing to the resulting explosion and loss of 7 lives.

It's a good thing our gats don't explode in cold temperatures when the o-rings fail, otherwise half of the UK pball scene would be in a different kind of dead box.

[tasteless joke]Maybe they should have used dow 33 or hater sauce, noobs [/tasteless joke]

Old video footage and a bit of info for those interested

Ironic that all that money goes up in smoke due to a simple oversight.

At least Columbia's crew got to see space before being BBQ'd!

The shocking thing is, several of the engineers expressed fears that some of the o rings could be damaged due to the unusual cold temperatures preceding the launch.

When they said it should be delayed to allow for checks, NASA didn't want to lose any more time and overuled them, losing 7 lives instead.

im wondering if nasa were more bothered with the loss or life or the loss of their expensive bit of kit? obviously to cameras it would be life but behind closed doors ... i wonder!
