Mooching round the 50, with the flag
Afternoon chaps just through I'd drop you a message to see if you can shed any light on a problem I have with my 5.1 stage.

The marker is running a stock board with no QEV, I have fitted the stage 5.1 and got the marker to cycle happily enough at a dwell in the mid to high thirties, my problem is that in order to get a half decent velocity I've had to up the input pressure on the reg gauge to 180 psi and I'm getting around the 260-270fps mark.

I have an angel angel air reg and the shot counter on there is estimating around 1500 shots for a 4500psi 1.1 bottle so efficiency is pretty good just that I would have expected be be able to get a better velocity at a lower pressure, as I have another ion with a firebolt (no qev either) and that's hitting 280-290 fps with an input pressure of about 150-160psi. I have swapped regs over which made no change so it does seem to centre on the Lucky 5.1 body and internals.

Is this 'normal' for the 5.1 or have I missed something in the setup, o-rings, lubing?? I also noticed that the bolt in the 5.1 has some very sharp (almost razor sharp) edges.

Any advice would be appreciated...

Sorry forgot to mention I've had a word with John C about this and he's got back to me with some useful facts (cheers John) just wanted to know if anyone else was running a similar setup and what their settings were or if anyone else had any ideas (though I'm tempted to go along with what John has told me as he is one of the 'Lucky gurus')

5.1 was designed to run at a higher pressure (smaller dump chamber) to improve efficiency, mine runs at around 200psi and i am using a mac noid before anyone tells me that's too high!

Ion go pop when dialled over 200psi?

I think the issue that ARG has here, is that he has taken good advice not to run his Ion over 200psi as he will pop the pipes, tubes, and gizmo's in is Ion.

ARG, sorry to correct you fella, but when we were having a tinker in your garage the other week, wasn't that Lucky Ion dialled up to about 195psi and you were still only getting 260fps?

If I'm correct then he is unable to dial his Ion up to the magic 300fps limit, as this would take his Ion over the 200psi threshold. How then does ARG go to a walk-on and then chrono his marker to match the site limit whether it be 280 or 290 or 300 fps, when he is limited by this 200psi threshold.

Comments anyone?

Knowing the quality of Smart Parts wares the guage is probably out:)

Marcus, you might be right but when I chrono'd on site the next week I was closer to 270 on the site radar.

just to clarify what I asking or the info I'm after:

The gauge on my ion reads about 190psi and at the chrono I'm in the 260-270 fps range what I'm after is any suggestions on what I might have missed in order to get my marker in the 290-300 fps range without going over the 200psi limit and popping hoses....or can the limit be breached safely???

Strawb - thanks for the update chap, are you running with a QEV? This would kind of tie in with what John C has told me as his is set around 190psi too.

Dark Stranger - always a possibility, any suggestions ? new/ non-sp gauge?

Ion hating part 435 take 1

Before jumping to conclusions re: the guage, it is well known on this forum that whenever Smart Parts is mentioned, mostly in association with the Ion, Dark Stranger usually starts talking about petrol, matches, and a bin.

Is he funny? Well maybe sometimes..... but a knackered gauge shouldnt be discounted, however remote the possibility. (Ion hating is so last year Dark mate... yawn.... :D )

ARG, on PM you discussed swapping some bits around to test to see whether the gauge is knackered, etc... so go ahead and do this to see whether it makes a difference to anything.

Good luck to you. Try not to break anything..... :)

Try setting the pressure to around 150 and then adjusting the dwell and see what effect that has,
i've built an ion from only aftermarket parts and dwell seems to cause a few issues.
not sure if it's been said (post first read later!) but have you changed the battery? my ion does some odd things on a low battery!

hope you sort it, Carlos......

I'm not using a qev although i do have a mac noid which vents faster that a stock noid. Not using the stage 1v4 bolt as it kinda destroyed itself, using a Tech-t L7 one now.

Will check exactly what pressure i'm running later(no gauge fitted) and dwell is set to 30ms (that's ms and not blinks, flashes or whatever else people work in on ions ;) ).

Do you have a barrel kit as it's easy to loose 20fps with a bad paint to barrel match?
