Vista is kak to put it mildly.. they have taken a perfectly stable (as long as it is looked after correctly) in Windows XP and then just changed things for the sake of it, not for the sake of improvement!

I have installed networks for 10 years now and never have I came accross such an anal system.

As for slowness. Try and disable the pointless Windows Aero, it ain't required and once the novelty wears off its a bit annoying. It then works good with a gig of ram.

We as a company are still doing systems with XP.. at some point though Vista will be the only option available on new kit... :(

An island in the rain
I'm running Vista on a Dual Core laptop with 2gigs of ram, shared graphics memory (no dediated graphics card) and a dual display - works pretty good. It seeemed to work fine with 1gig when I first got it, but I didn't have lots installed yet. Compatability issues with old programs - especially with print drivers and whatnot are such a pain in the ass though, so far I've found fixes for all my current programs though. Seems like ton's of programs have got 'known compatability issues' when you go to install them, is it really that different than XP at the heart of it?

Actual requirements for aero are:

1-gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) of random access memory (RAM)

128-megabyte (MB) graphics card

Aero also requires a DirectX 9 class graphics processor that supports a Windows Display Driver Model Driver, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware, and 32 bits per pixel.

For best results, you might also want to follow these graphics processor recommendations:

64 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution that is less than 1,310,720 pixels (for example, a 17–inch flat panel LCD monitor that has a 1280 × 1024 resolution)

128 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution from 1,310,720 to 2,304,000 pixels (for example, a 21.1–inch flat panel LCD monitor that has up to a 1600 × 1200 resolution)

256 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution greater than 2,304,000 pixels (for example, a 30–inch wide-screen flat panel LCD monitor that has up to a 2560 × 1600 resolution)
------------------

I'm going to see if I can stick it out until the the first major service pack unless I find a important program I need 'isn't compatible', in which case I might have to install XP.

Still, it is pretty (agg), and the new search function is excellent.

Take it into PC world and speak to the experts, im talking from a-level computing and ICT, and an interest in PCs.
Hey! not all Pc world workers are goobers, my bro works for them and he's studying games design, and has built at least 50 different PC's for mates, and family.

leave Vista alone, the drivers for things like graphics cards are ****!

Building a pc is a doddle. Understanding the fundamentals of how it works and being able to troubleshoot it is another skill alltogether

Anyone can do a games design course with average grades from secondary school. Even a goober:)

Personaly I am sticking to XP for the moment. If it aint broke then why fix it?

Apparently Dell have had to switch back to giving buyers the option of XP over Vista now..

To be fair though as soon as the hardware catches up a bit (in terms of bang for your buck) everyone will love it, its just a matter of time..

Funny that, I ordered my new machine (2 gig ram, Intel Core 2 Viiv Duo 1.86 jobbie) from Dell 3 days ago, there was no option for XP, only Vista...

Now i'm kinda worried hearing all these stories about how crap it is....:(
