Vista is kak to put it mildly.. they have taken a perfectly stable (as long as it is looked after correctly) in Windows XP and then just changed things for the sake of it, not for the sake of improvement!
I have installed networks for 10 years now and never have I came accross such an anal system.
As for slowness. Try and disable the pointless Windows Aero, it ain't required and once the novelty wears off its a bit annoying. It then works good with a gig of ram.
We as a company are still doing systems with XP.. at some point though Vista will be the only option available on new kit...
