I watched a bit of it, now don't get me wrong I like dark humour, but every time I turned it on there was a film about kids starving to death. Didn't really get it.

Not everybody is willing to "get off their ass" and spend years of their life in Africa helping the aid operation, with no income during that time. You're saying that you would happily do just that? Donating money IS doing something. Did you watch Comic Relief? Bill Oddie showed a video documentary where the money has been used to fund a much improved medical centre, with a large store of drugs along with an ambulance and other life-saving services.

How can you possibly question the donation of money in such a circumstance

Rant over.

Then I guess you're pretty naive. To us 40p isn't a lot - Maybe a snickers or can of coke. To them, 40p could buy several tablets that can clear illnesses that are mild to us but deadly to those with weak immune systems, or even several clean needles to prevent the spread of AIDS or similiar fatal illnesses.

If everybody took the same view as you then the world would be one f@cked up place.

I'll start donating when they give me the option of paying to not have comic relief on the TV. I'll happily pay to keep Lenny Henry and Chris Evans out of work.
Maybe Blair could take a little bit of the £700 a month he removes from my wages for teaching children with special needs and send that over?

And to anyone who thinks I'm a bit cold hearted..... every penny that you spend that doesn't go on food and shelter is 'frivalous' particularly that spent on the PC you are sitting at and the paintballs you fire from your expensive marker. How much did you give? Still having a night out? Still going to play on Sunday?
One night of the year set aside to make us feel better about ourselves. That's what comic relief is. 'oh, but it helps so many people', yes, it does, but the National Lottery brings in as much every two weeks.
Sitting watching a bunch of C-list nobodies doing 'comedy' that on a normal night even chanel 5 wouldn't show.
But it's all in a good cause.
Run another lottery, have it continue for a year, at the end split the money. Half on prizes, half on charity. I'll guarantee It will raise more than comic relief does once a year. Plus it has the added advantage of not requiring any of those comedians the BBC won't pay to work any other night to be brought out of cold storage.

How much money did you spend on things you didn't need last week? If it's anything then your stance is pretty hyopcritical. Why would you buy a can of coke if it could save a life? For that matter....... do you play paintball? How expensive is that.... you could go jogging instead and save hundreds with ARV injections couldn't you?

Look at it this way...... my job is to teach autistic children. My other responsibilities are to my family. I raise money for the school I work at.
Aside form this I pay about £700 a month out in tax etc... I feel that this is me paying to support the people who should be sorting the ****ing world out.
To put it another way

THE OLYMPICS ARE GOING TO COST NINE BILLION POUNDS

And how much will comic relief raise?

Let's cancel the olympics and but everyone in Africa plumbing, a swimming pool and a ****ing hummer.

Priorities.
I sort mine out, I'd like to think those in power could do the same.
Obviously not.

I see your point. We could ALL do a hellova lot more and save millions more lives. I'm just saying that donating something is better than donating nothing at all, and that we shouldn't pass the responsibility of donating onto others when we could make a big difference.

What I'm saying is that the responsibility to look after the world is actually held by the governments. They should be sorting stuff out. They are responsible as we elect them to power.
I pay out a fortune in tax, NI etc.... then everything I buy has VAT added to it.
If they would stop screwing about with crap nobody needs, then maybe, just maybe they could do the job they are elected to do.

I have a job, it's hard enough. If everyone would just look after the bit of the world they have some control over, maybe things would get better.

If you want to give, then give. But don't have a go at those who decide not to.
I do plenty, but I won't waste money on Lenny Henry's flying circus.

We raise money at work for the 'staff charity' which is voted for at the end of each year. Sometimes raffles/competitions etc are held that you can pay to enter, sometimes we just pay £1 to come into work in 'casual' clothes.

The company match every penny we raise and then generally donate a considerable sum at the end of the year as well.

The only stipulation when the list of charities to vote on is produced, is that none of them can be one of the Top 50 charities by wealth. This means that the money raised has a much bigger impact on the charity that receives it as the 'usual charities' such as cancer research etc already get a lot of donations and it's actually the time taken for the medical research to be proven etc that's mainly holding them back rather than lack of income.

So, I donate to the staff charity every year on a fairly regular basis, once a month normally. And I don't donate to any other charity, it's not that I don't care, but I wont donate to a charity just because the TV tells me to.

thats fair enough but don't you think that it helps bring problems that you dont always hear about to the attention of millions and helps people change the way they think?
