Well, where shall I start (sorry this is a bit long winded but I wanted to get the story straight).
Got to the Indoor at 7:30am, fields were ready to be inflated, got the barbeque and tea urn on and started to prepare for what I hoped was going to be a mega tourny with each team playing SIXTEEN games each.
Lights on, teams started to arrive and start kitting up, just one thing amiss, only TWO marshalls had arrived. Well Dave & Rosie crack on with inflating the fields while we start to find where our missing 8 marshalls were.
After a phonecall to Russ Rulebook who had agreed to organise the other marshalls on our behalf, we got a phonecall back advising that "they were all on the way down when their vehicle had broken down near Knutsford and they were waiting for the RAC and they would call us back", they only being five instead of eight.
8:30am, still only two marshalls, no return phonecall and 30minutes before first game - heart beating a little faster now! We then tried to get back in touch with the missing five with an idea that we could maybe start the tournament with teams marshalling each other to start while Chris Edwards would drive up to Knutsford to pick them up.
Well, when we got back in touch with them, the RAC had arrived and they had decided to go back home instead of coming to the indoor! Well, I'm sweating profusely now. What next, no marshalls - no tournament and 17 teams chomping at the bit so we called all the captains together to see what we could do.
So teams were asked if they had any spare players who would be prepared to marshall instead and we managed to get another six brave soles to step up to what I could only call a Baptism of Fire as they were about to ref 72 games on each field!
So, we finally got the tourny started approximately 75 minutes behind schedule but we were up and running with a tournament which I hope everybody who attended thoroughly enjoyed?
So, apologies first....
1. Sorry for the late start and in turn late finish.
2. Sorry for the field scheduling and divisions playing all their games on one field, this was MY bad and it won't happen again!
3. Sorry for some quick turnarounds between games, but trying to get sixteen games in less than 8 hours is tricky to say the least but I hope it was worth it?
4. Any bad calls, I'm sure you'll all agree everybody did their best!
And now BIG, BIG THANKS too:
All the marshalls: Rosie Thomas, Dave Clarke, Allen Anderson, Daniel Clark, Steve Hart, Sarah Jackson, Eastie & Tom - you guys and gals ROCKED.
Chris Edwards - you held it all together - you are a star!
All of the teams: Thanks for you understanding, patience, help & sportsmanship - you really made it work!
The rest of the Phoenix Crew: "DJ" Wayne, Nicola and Jamie the cook. Also Paul, Nicks and Mark (setup & breakdown crew who have got the thankless task of cleaning up ).
Trev, Tim & Matt from H-Pac, thanks for the constant clean air as always.
Finally, NO THANKS WHATSOEVER to:
Nuff said I think (an apology would be nice).
Well, rant over - we'll notch this one up to experience and make sure the next one goes without a hitch and is even better.
See you all at the next tourny!
