There is a certain value you pay VAT at, otherwise its just classed as a gift. Some one with more knowledge will evaluate further

well does that mean that you pay VAT twice then, cos in the U.S you pay VAT on everything you buy, ontop on the value of the goods

No you don't, you are exempt from taxes when buying in the States and shipping here, that's why you get taxed VAT, a U.K. only tax. And the import tax is to discourage you from buyinh outside the U.K.
