What does walk on mean? Is it a discount? Does it mean you simply buy and walk on to a session? I hear a lot about it but Don't know what it actually means.
A quick(and probably stupid) question.

Walk on is a day, usually a Sunday, which a paintball field holds for players with their own paintball equipment.
Much like a punter day they welcome players who play paintball a bit more seriously. Usually play away from normal rental punters but they do use some of the same fields and sometimes play fields especially made for walk on players.
Places running walk on days also sometimes allow youto bring your own paint aswell as having paint available to buy from them on the day.

As for bringing your own balls, I believe most places allow you to bring your own balls now. Best thing to do is check the website of the venue hosting the walk on or better still give them a ring.

With regard to byo, you do end up with the need to get and look after your paintballs yourself. If it has to be sent to you then you're at the mercy of the courier. Easier if you can get to a shop and transport yourself
Unless the site paint isn't good, or you find a preferred brand then ask the walkon site what they can provide
