Where to start......
Personally, I'm a Premiere guy. Love the Adobe Dynamic Link (when it works!)
Animation, AE
Stills - Illustrator
Quick & dirty as hell stuff - the YouTube video editor. It's not brilliant but it works.
Mac man here, used to use Final cut (mac based) then apple decide to not update it due to pandering to their cash cow of iPhone and ignore all the creative people who put them in their place originally!, so I now use adobe premiere, never looked back since, cheap, powerful, and affordable!, use photoshop elements for graphics and stills for videos too, .PNG files are your friends

What I'm doing a lot of recently is using the Cineware plugin within After Effects for scene extension and cool bits of graphics, as well as Speedgrade to improve the skin tones in my work
It's fairly cheap but takes hours and hours to learn. I've run about 600-700 hours on it and I'd still class myself as intermediate.
fairly cheap!? last time I checked it was just short of £700! lol I trained in it in film school so very much know how to use it, just never been able to afford to buy it lol
