I'm in Canada right now. It's much harder to get them here than in the US (a lot of permits and paperwork etc.), but not impossible, as it would be in the UK.
I started the process to get firearms certified in January. I was able to start buying in June, but only rifles. I can now (finally) legally buy a pistol and transport it to the range.

This thread is awesome to read.

I am glad to find I am not the only person who has thought about this is far to much detail. Being in the UK with its restrictions on firearms is less than an issue for me due to my background however getting hold of the firearm would rarely be the problem, it would be ammunition for said firearm.

I suppose many people think about where they would hold up in the long term however the biggest hurdle to overcome is that in the short term after the initial outbreak and then moving around.

The chances of getting hold of a tank are slim however Police Riot Vans are the next best thing for charging through the hordes of stupid people who think they can riot because its there right to (or zombies as this thread was meant for), plenty of room inside for storage and moving people and materials.

One very important consideration is the ability to reload your shell casings. My Xmas gift this year will be a reloading kit, so I can use spent brass and re-fill with powder, strikers and bullets. I'll be buying these in bulk, and have a rotating 1000 round inventory of 556 and 9mm (the 2 easiest rounds to find) for my personal use. It brings down the cost per round considerably, and means that, when the $hit hits, most people will run out of ammo long before I do.

You're right, short term will be crazy. best to keep your head well down at the beginning. It will be the law of the jungle. Many of the unprepared will die. Many of the 'bad guys' will die too, so it will be way safer to move once the initial kick-off has abated, and all the scumbags have their new trainers, flat-screens and a bunch of new Blu-rays to watch.
In the apocalypse I would automatically gun-down anyone wearing new training shoes. Those types can't be trusted.

The first couple of days when you put it that way sound rather enjoyable!

One thing I don't understand is survival is one thing but what about either curing or killing the disease/living dead. Nobody ever thinks maybe focus on solving the issue instead of muddle through.

I haven't been called smart arse for a while :p

Well as it has said I believe on one of the pages it all depends upon what or how the zombie apocalypse started. Once you can determine where and what started it then you can try and trouble shoot a solution but without that important piece of information you stand no chance.

If it is the living dead then you can start to work out a means of stemming the flow of fresh meat by ensuring anyone who dies naturally or via zombie infection is burned, no body no zombie right?
If it is some sought of infection then prisoners/test subjects are required and hope to hell somebody was smart enough to save someone with knowledge in isolating infections!

I'm being vetted now for a combat pistol shooting club here in sunny Northern Ireland. In about a year and a half I'll be likely buying my own personal shooter :)

After that I'm living at the gun club :)

Exactly my point, you would be flippin lucky to be around all the tools/people necessary to defeat and cure a zombie apocalypse.
